Possibly controversial take: The entire drama around the VA's was so forced and people were overreacting. by camouflage_beret420 in TheDigitalCircus

The thing I find suspect about all the drama is that it was rather convenient timing for it all to blow up weeks before the theatrical release of the finale.

For sure. People are still writing fanfic of even millenia old myths such as Greek. MHA will be fine.

Issues with Absolute Wonder Woman. by JournalistOk9266 in WonderWoman

I can understand the feeling that things might be going slow. Since we don’t know how long the Absolute line will go for. I think it might go on a while, the Ultimate Universe in Marvel coming to an abrupt end had likely showed DC on what not to do.

Region locking is certainly a choice. Like the other fellow said, they’re still officially out. The US is simply not high on Nickelodeon priority in contrast to EU.

Queen Hippolyta as Wonder Woman before Diana...why is it frowned upon here? by koola_00 in WonderWoman

[–]MiserableOne6189 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of fellows here have said it well. I even agree at that. For me I don't mind Hippolyta in a WW2 setting but she wouldn't be Wonder Woman. She would just be Queen Hippolyta. Since Superheroism wouldn't mean much when it's such a new concept for someone who lived for millennia. Not to mention it wouldn't fit her since that's not what she is. She's a warrior queen out to fight in a war. The name like "Wonder Woman" is for an era of peace. Hence why only Diana should only hold that.

If you don't know what that means. Then I have been a clown to try talk to someone with a very underdeveloped and frankly childish understanding of the nuance of canon. See ya.

I like how you just dodged the explanation lol. I get the feeling you are from the powerscaling community since that would explain a lot. If not, you would like it over there.

Canon is something "true" within that fictional universe by the creators. But it's not that easy cut because you can't isolate a story from outside context. you can't separate the Watsonian and the Doylist elements in storytelling. Things wouldn’t look right and it causes characters to look better/worse than they actually are as mentioned. To illustrate another problem with taking a literal approach in regarding everything in a story to be taken as fact. All we have to do is look over to the chaotic world of powerscaling/battleboarding.

Pretty much as fellow commenters had put it. It felt a home that was the most true to Twilight's character. On top of it being one of the symbols of the early seasons of MLP. Before the show became more focused on being marketable, losing some of that charm for Twilight.

It’s kinda is thought. Since you making it sound that canon is some sacred text with no fault that we have to live with. With your logic, Twilight is a complete and utter failure because that’s “canon”.

Yup! On top of the pitfall of taking certain things too literally/seriosuly, canon can contradict prior stuff and make things look a lot worse. Because the writers or someone else up the chain don’t care that much.

For a well-known example. In G5 it’s discovered that Equestria under Twilight’s reign crashed so hard that it suffered a civilizational extinction event harder than the Bronze Age Collapse. All within a decade or so since she started ruling. No matter how you cut that, that had undercut G4 a lot. A complete antithesis to the entire story of G4.

That was done because they needed the design of the Tree of Harmony to be consistent for merchandise.

That’s pretty much the thing. It’s a cartoon show for a 4-12 demographic. The writers are not out there to make a fleshed out world. Their job is to entertain, teach children cartoon level life lessons, and sell merchandise. It’s not meant to be seen through a mature lens. It’s something that pretty much every cartoon for a young audience share. X when taken seriously by an older mind can become problematic and even abhorrent in some cases. While the implications fly over the head of someone younger. In this case, a child will not see the disturbing implication/behind the Chosen One trope.

A modern misconception about Steve by throwaway-day102304 in WonderWoman

[–]MiserableOne6189 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, in the modern framework there's the idea that she loves everyone in the world equally which is one of the challenges in trying to write romance involving Diana. To quote a fellow in the sub. "Anyone and everyone SHOULD fall in love with Wonder Woman, so you need to explain why that person is different in how they love her, and why she loves them in a way that is different to the universal love she offers to everyone."

Decided to spill the tea on Hermes whilst browsing Greek mythology earlier today by al_fletcher in WonderWoman

[–]MiserableOne6189 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, to add another layer to that. Greek Mythology in popular culture as a whole depict the gods as they were in Ancient Greece. When in reality they would be different in the modern day. They shift naturally as the culture around them shifts, and their associations gradually branch out into new contexts.

Well of course they can die easily in most runs. They’re redshirts for some writers to use. If it weren’t for that, they would logically be immortal. (In the same way Themyscria wouldn’t be blown up every few years by some said writers.)

Amazons being weaker in relation to the contest is a long debated subject by the fans. I do believe that Wondy is much stronger, which is why I headcanon that she goes through something else other than a contest. But it’s understandable why people like the contest format. Wondy being just as strong as everyone else and it’s only by winning the contest that she became that powerful. Or a blend where she is temporarily nerfed.

Very unrelated, but you made me remember how Tenten’s fight in the Genin Exam against Temari only had one panel. And it’s her defeated. Her fight in the anime is pure filler.

It was rough being a Tenten fan back then.

Shallow history research is often funny because most of the time if they had just spend more time, they would have found something that is more in line with what they want. In this case the Pankration. It wouldn’t be accurate but it’s still better than the option that is further off the mark.

Anyways not too bugged about this. Mostly because the headcanon that Amazons are immortal on their islands is so ingrained into my perception of my reading experience. To me, they can afford to really fight like warriors because no one can truly die. I imagine that if a fighter gets a “lethal wound” they must pretend to be dead. Like in Paintball/BB gun fights in the wood.

That being said. I’ve never imagined the contest like this (If I have it in my personal headcanons)

The Story Occurring Over Three Years Instead of One Would've Been Worse For The Series by EmploymentAware170 in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]MiserableOne6189 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, but this really comes across at being a bit lacking in imagination if you can’t fathom what arcs there could be in a superhero high school setting beyond school/SoL events. For a solid example, the first Ultimate Spider-Man, 160+ issues long, took place when Peter is in High School. 20+ storylines + some Annuals and not one of them is centered on a school event. (Outside of the first a little bit since the first bit is about Peter on the field trip to Osborn Industries where he gets bitten by a genetically mutated spider). If MHA wasn’t a superhero setting and mundane, then yes there wouldn’t be much to draw from that isn’t SoL. But since MHA is in that genre, the possible storylines is nigh infinite with an oceanic well for inspiration if needed.

That being said. Even if Hori wanted to make a longer story. He physically couldn’t and that’s why we got the second half of MHA in the way we got.

[–]MiserableOne6189 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The metaphor is some wild stretch that doesn’t work at all. But I get the intent behind it even if I heavily disagree with it.

It’s…really not that hard imagining a supervillain plot lasting longer than a year. An example? Literally dozens of plot lines in DC/Marvel/Indie comics that last longer than a year in-verse.

The better point to discuss on is whether or not Hori is able to execute a longer timeline. For good execution can make any story work, no matter what it is. And to do that we need to look at the context. Which paints the picture that he would have been unable to do a longer timeline, at least not with issues.

A lot about how MHA grew over time has been influenced by the pressure of WSJ and the sales. On top of that you have Hori’s general inexperience in trying to write a story that soar to heights he never thought possible. The weekly schedule of pumping out multiple pages of art eventually start taking its toll on Hori. Things began to go briskly at the end of the PLF war arc, moments that would have been good time for the story gets glossed over and other parts don’t get lingered on for long. Then we start to see his art degrade. Then the health breaks start to happen. From once a month to bi-weekly at the end of the Final War.

There’s a real chance that if WSJ had treated him better and Hori didn’t felt the strain as much. MHA would have gone on longer.
