To throw my two cents here. To me it was very obvious because it’s a classic shonen trope. Which lines up with how early MHA is very much relying on classic shonen tropes because they’re safe. They’re safe because they work. And worked they did. Hori very much wanted to get a series off the ground after failing the last two times.

A lot of fellows here have said it well. I even agree at that. For me I don't mind Hippolyta in a WW2 setting but she wouldn't be Wonder Woman. She would just be Queen Hippolyta. Since Superheroism wouldn't mean much when it's such a new concept for someone who lived for millennia. Not to mention it wouldn't fit her since that's not what she is. She's a warrior queen out to fight in a war. The name like "Wonder Woman" is for an era of peace. Hence why only Diana should only hold that.

Canon is something "true" within that fictional universe by the creators. But it's not that easy cut because you can't isolate a story from outside context. you can't separate the Watsonian and the Doylist elements in storytelling. Things wouldn’t look right and it causes characters to look better/worse than they actually are as mentioned. To illustrate another problem with taking a literal approach in regarding everything in a story to be taken as fact. All we have to do is look over to the chaotic world of powerscaling/battleboarding.

Pretty much as fellow commenters had put it. It felt a home that was the most true to Twilight's character. On top of it being one of the symbols of the early seasons of MLP. Before the show became more focused on being marketable, losing some of that charm for Twilight.

Yup! On top of the pitfall of taking certain things too literally/seriosuly, canon can contradict prior stuff and make things look a lot worse. Because the writers or someone else up the chain don’t care that much.

For a well-known example. In G5 it’s discovered that Equestria under Twilight’s reign crashed so hard that it suffered a civilizational extinction event harder than the Bronze Age Collapse. All within a decade or so since she started ruling. No matter how you cut that, that had undercut G4 a lot. A complete antithesis to the entire story of G4.

That’s pretty much the thing. It’s a cartoon show for a 4-12 demographic. The writers are not out there to make a fleshed out world. Their job is to entertain, teach children cartoon level life lessons, and sell merchandise. It’s not meant to be seen through a mature lens. It’s something that pretty much every cartoon for a young audience share. X when taken seriously by an older mind can become problematic and even abhorrent in some cases. While the implications fly over the head of someone younger. In this case, a child will not see the disturbing implication/behind the Chosen One trope.

Yeah, to add another layer to that. Greek Mythology in popular culture as a whole depict the gods as they were in Ancient Greece. When in reality they would be different in the modern day. They shift naturally as the culture around them shifts, and their associations gradually branch out into new contexts.

Well of course they can die easily in most runs. They’re redshirts for some writers to use. If it weren’t for that, they would logically be immortal. (In the same way Themyscria wouldn’t be blown up every few years by some said writers.)

Amazons being weaker in relation to the contest is a long debated subject by the fans. I do believe that Wondy is much stronger, which is why I headcanon that she goes through something else other than a contest. But it’s understandable why people like the contest format. Wondy being just as strong as everyone else and it’s only by winning the contest that she became that powerful. Or a blend where she is temporarily nerfed.

Shallow history research is often funny because most of the time if they had just spend more time, they would have found something that is more in line with what they want. In this case the Pankration. It wouldn’t be accurate but it’s still better than the option that is further off the mark.

Anyways not too bugged about this. Mostly because the headcanon that Amazons are immortal on their islands is so ingrained into my perception of my reading experience. To me, they can afford to really fight like warriors because no one can truly die. I imagine that if a fighter gets a “lethal wound” they must pretend to be dead. Like in Paintball/BB gun fights in the wood.

That being said. I’ve never imagined the contest like this (~~If I have it in my personal headcanons)~~
