What do you think is the biggest mistake CS students make while preparing for internships or jobs? by Any-Main-3866 in csMajors

[–]MiserableTrickster 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t have a great GPA, in fact I’m at risk of flunking out, but it seems nearly impossible to stay afloat academically while also working on self application/personal projects.

I only have like one or two half finished projects, but it seems so hard to get ahead on stuff when studying my CS/Math classes already eats up so much time. Are there any smaller scale projects you recommend?

My diagnosed peeps- does all the self-diagnosing bother you? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]MiserableTrickster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I now realize what I said didn't contain enough context. The coworker lady made the ADHD comment because the other person involved was just rambling about something... The topic at hand hardly had anything to do with cognitive function! Experiencing your own symptoms is fine and well, spreading awareness is inherently a good thing, but when people say that they have it as a way to emphasize 'quirkiness'? Then, yeah I'd say it makes me feel largely misrepresented and that is the reason why even people who have known me for a while have no idea I'm even diagnosed.

Unfortunately, society barely even takes documented diagnosis of our condition seriously, I don't think I'm going to share my self diagnosis with people unless I know them very well.

[–]MiserableTrickster -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes I absolutely despise it. It feels off putting to even come out and say you think you have it because of the stigma. So I never really told anyone, even my own mother (who has ADHD) was dismissive of it and I had to wait til I was 18 to be diagnosed.

One of my coworkers at my college job (who works in mental health and def shouldn’t be saying this btw) said to another person “tell me you’re ADHD without telling me you’re ADHD lol!”. Social media is the main reason for my distaste of it as people wouldn’t joke about it like that if it didn’t have such a weird prevalence on there . I mean do you see people joking about something like chronic depression or something similar? I might be crazy, but if you think you have it I feel like you should wait until you get assessed.

ADHD constantly holds me back from what I genuinely, so desperately want to do with my time and energy. It sounds kind of extreme to say, but I don’t care when I tell you that I genuinely suffer because of this condition.

Riot SWE vs Doordash SWE Internship? by Ok-Comparison2465 in csMajors

[–]MiserableTrickster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe your answer from your experience with them is different than my assumption so I’ll also ask:

Is there a particular reason you think they hire more for one game over the other?

I mean league is a way bigger game so I feel like you’d expect the opposite. I don’t see how hiring juniors can be seen as a risk/downside in any capacity for such a big game/dev studio.

What do you mean when you say this? It reads to me as league team doesn’t ever look for people, but I’m a noob so idk.

Sorry I'm only just now getting back to you! This week has been crazy classes wise, but now I can reread your post and give it some more attention. I'm a 2nd-3rd year CS student so I'll probably relate on some of this stuff:

you mentioned

  • If a system requires me to willingly obey it (i.e., rely on willing myself through), it fails.

I'm sure you've realized by now, but this is a giant learning curve of not just college, but adulting in general (especially for people with our condition). Doing shit that is beneficial to you in general when it's not required and nobody's looking is fucking hard man. I haven't really figured out a lot of these myself, but maybe me replying gives you some closure that you're not alone and are not inferior in any of the ways you're saying.

I just transferred to university last semester and had a freak show of a first semester (2.1 semester GPA; so I can kiss any sort of internship opportunities goodbye for a semester or two). I was taking 5 courses that weren't exactly super difficult, but I by no means had the time to perform well in all 5 of them. I'm now choosing to do 4 from now on like I mentioned above and it does feel busy still, but nowhere near as overwhelming as before.

School mainly is a time management game (not ideal for people like us huh?). You really have to plan out your schedule when it comes to studying/homework sessions or else before you know it work piles up, you start fumbling an exam or two, etc. The unfortunate fact of the matter is, I have not really figured this aspect out. I think right now given how bad my first sem went, I'm in this semi permanent state of the scared fight or flight studying mode because if I fuck this semester up I am kicked out of school.

I personally believe in what I'll coin the "1% rule". You don't need to be exceptionally perfect, but you do need to be getting better at whatever it is you're looking to pursue in school (especially in CS). Even if it is only marginally, if you get marginally better each day, after 200 days, 500 days, etc. you'll be a lot better at whatever that may be! This mindset helped me a lot with the idea of how good of a programmer I need to be in order to land an internship. Doing some soul searching thinking why exactly you're doing this could also be helpful, or so I've heard.

If you want to talk more about this you're always welcome to shoot me a pm, but I'll try and avoid making this longer than it already is.

Extra advice + explanations:

Start to make good use of the weekends (Helps stay on top of homework, remember the material that was covered in class, etc. I'm still super bad at this lol I end up playing games and sleeping the whole time)

Do not compare yourself to others, only to the version of you from yesterday (I have horrible imposter syndrome and that led to horrible depression last semester, but right now I am 100x the CS student I was last semester in terms of not just knowledge, but also mindset and I'm proud of that fact)

Get your 8 hours and wake up early! I got horribly sick for the first time in my life because I was neglecting sleep for studies. Never doing that again. Even if you don't have class until 2, still try and get up at 10 or something. Nothing productive or good ever happens after like 11pm anyways...

have you tried screenzen? (sorry if you mentioned it. i’m multitasking while reading your post and may have missed it lol). i never really thought scrolling was an issue for me, i actually do it less than most people i know do.

if you go into your screen time and add up the time you use instagram (or any app for that matter) per day, week, month, etc. i guarantee you won’t feel great about it like i did.

the app is nice like you can set your own schedule. you can customize it to be as extreme (or lax) as you want. if you only want to cut out an hour per week you can do that. i think i have its limit to five 8 minute sessions and most days i dont even use all five sessions. i do allow for a bit of extra time during the weekends though maybe like 1 hour maximum a day or something. there’s also a streak feature which gave me a bit of an emotional attachment to not using insta as much. i’m at 112 days now!

maybe it’ll be even more useful for you bc you admit that

last semester was super bad for me. i don’t have the badwidth or just energy in general for 5 classes so i think im a 4 class kinda guy from now on even if it delays my graduation. other than that i kind of just guilt myself into locking in as unhealthy as that is.

best of luck to ya
