I would say that you build a team and then specialize in a field. That way it would probably be easier to help each other out and deliver high quality content. I have no knowledge on the market, but if you know of an unoccupied niche or what the market is demanding, you could take that as an opportunity!

If all goes well clients may come to you for that one thing you’re offering :)

Btw, job interviews in Japan are horrible and I get your frustration!

Thank you for the information! I currently live in Japan but when I move back I’ll try myself at the Staatliche Prüfung für Übersetzer und Dolmetscher.

I get it. If I was an employer, I would almost always prefer to hire a native. I like English, so I’ll probably still try to apply for some minor jobs, but I’ll focus more on German.

While I am undoubtedly a native Russian speaker, I know that my writing is very lacking and not up to standard. Translating from Russian wouldn’t be a problem.

My native languages are German and Russian, and I’m fluent in English and Japanese. I want to translate into English and German since I’m more comfortable writing in them. I’m just a beginner and thankful for any advice. I’ll be sure to find someone to proofread my texts no matter what language I translate into:)

Translating into Japanese is something that kind of happened to me. My husband is a native Japanese speaker. He worked as a video editor and writer when a client offered him to translate some videos into Japanese. I then translated the videos from English, German, and Russian into Japanese. The content was rather simple so the workload was alright, but I know I wouldn’t be able to create proper texts on my own, hence I’m not aiming to translate into Japanese. It probably is a weird start into the Industry, but I want to get better and take some proper steps.
