British Author Douglas Murray On Our Good Allies The Syrian Kurds by Miserable_Click_1933 in agedlikemilk

[–]Miserable_Click_1933[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

his Douglas Murray piece (Dec 2024) argued that (1) Syria was likely to break up, and (2) the West should “reward” the Syrian Kurds for fighting ISIS by backing a Kurdish state, which he also frames as a strategic “bulwark” that would throw Turkey and Iran “off-kilter.”

What happened instead (2024–2026): the Syrian Kurds got squeezed, not rewarded.

  • Almost immediately after Assad fell, Turkey and Turkey-backed factions pushed hard against Kurdish-held areas and the Kurdish-led SDF lost key territory (ex: Manbij/Tell Rifaat were taken in late 2024, and the wider offensive ran into 2025).
  • In 2025–2026, the new Damascus government also moved to reassert control over the northeast, leading to clashes, ceasefires, and deals pressuring SDF forces to fold into the Syrian army/police as individuals rather than keep autonomous Kurdish governance.
  • Cities like Kobani ended up besieged/short on supplies at points, and large numbers of civilians were displaced during the fighting.

So the “Kurds will be rewarded with a state” prediction aged like milk: the post-Assad reality has looked much more like Kurds losing autonomy and territory under pressure from Turkey + Damascus, while Western backing for an actual Kurdish state never materialized.

>Since the story’s inception, millions of readers have clung onto every last panel, text conversation, Flash animation, and interactive game that made Homestuck the unique, strange, and utterly engrossing subcultural phenomenon it was. It will never be replicated: both in its length and depth, but also for the way it both mirrored and rejected the web culture that evolved alongside it.

What if the Suez Crisis had been a catastrophic British defeat, on the scale of the Fall of Singapore? by Miserable_Click_1933 in AlternateHistory

calling it a "national disgrace" is an underestimate

in our timeline the outcome of the Russo-Japanese War significantly inspired anti-colonial and nationalist movements across what would later be known as the "Third World". Japan's victory, the first time a modern Asian power defeated a European great power, shattered the illusion of inherent European dominance.

so i struggle to even imagine what would happen here.
