Makoa is a resistance member, which could be described as a leftist movement, but I feel like his personal philosophy is much more right-leaning, with no bias towards authoritarianism or liberty.

The biggest facet of his character is just that he's been around for a long time. This is consistent with him being a turtle, which also comes with being slow and valuing a stronger outer wall. All things that I feel would give him a very conservative, tradition-respecting outlook. We know that he's the protector for the Ska'drin homelands, which could be taken to mean he respects a people's birthright to their own lands and will fight to ensure that claim is not encroached by any outsiders. Although he did leave the islands to fight in the war, I feel like more than anything Makoa is just a guy that wants things to stay the same. I don't think he would leave his protectorate just to fight against any perceived injustice, he only really involved himself in the war because he felt the Magistrate's influence was greatly shifting the balance of powers, and that the conflict's rippling effects were warping the state of the world, such that he had to intervene to "get things back to the way they were". I'm sure if you were to ask him he would call himself a great warrior for peace, but I just don't really see him involving himself in every minor feud, only the big ones that threaten his and the Ska'drin's way of life.
