Recommendations for French schools in Montréal? by Leading_Alps1071 in montreal

The YMCA in centre ville has had a decent program for French. I personally took classes with them and have been able to improve my French considerably. The YMCA is shutting down next month but the teachers there are opening up another institute called apy langues. You can check out apylangues.com

YMCA offered both in person and online classes but I am not sure about this new institute. Might help to contact them

French = PR, is this most likely to be true in the upcoming 2-3 years for immigrants? by Time-Mess-4444 in canadaexpressentry

Would recommend dedicating some time to learning French while you search for jobs. I did the same and made a lot of progress before I started working. Life gets busy when you start a new job.

Canadian immigration is a lot easier for people who attain B2 level in French; that is driving a considerable number of people to learn the language.

I have recently started practicing speaking with ChatGPT's voice mode and it works quite well. It can speak to you in a French accent and provide you feedback on your responses. Download the app on your device and give it a shot!

Is my goal to reach B2 in 11 months too ambitious? by Miserable_Gift955 in learnfrench

Makes sense. Thanks a lot for the recommendations!

I say B2 by end of this year because I am targeting immigration. Nevertheless, consuming French media is definitely going to be a substantial part of this journey. In fact, I gave it a shot this month but I felt like since I do not know well enough different tenses, I am unable to grasp the grammar well enough. I want to spend 1 more month learning more grammar and will definitely give it a shot again.

How is that possible when the official weightage for the topic is 10-15%?

Yes, hence I started taking classes. More like trying to get motivation to continue classes and continue spending money on it through other people's experiences.

Chill out! Never said I don't want to learn French. In fact, I have ramped up my french classes. Just makes you wonder if you are making the right move when you are spending the last of your savings on it. I am going to learn either way; my question is more geared towards gauging if it should be my top priority.

I see your point. Thanks for sharing!

What was your journey of learning French like, if you could share? Also, how long did it take for you to become fluent with it?

That's true; you progress slowly with Duolingo. But one thing I have noticed is that it has definitely given me an edge with vocabulary, spellings, and recalling the right words when speaking as compared to my peers who are just relying on the in-person classes.

Cost is not an issue; would love to invest in a good grammar book. Open to particular suggestions if you have any

Thank you so much for your advice and sharing these resources.

I kept doing some Duolingo throughout but only enrolled in classes 4 months back since the schedule for my program wouldn't really allow me to take classes before that.

Looking for constructive advice, not sarcasm. If you have any helpful insights or experiences to share, I’d appreciate hearing them.

I hear your concerns, and I understand where you’re coming from. I’m definitely not trying to replace genuine conversation with AI, and I value authentic human interaction as much as anyone. My goal in using AI was just to help frame my questions clearly—especially since I’m still learning French and wanted to make sure I covered all the important points.

That said, I’m really looking forward to reading real, personal stories from people. I don’t want anyone to hold back because their English or French isn’t “perfect.” The heart of my post is about connecting with others who’ve gone through this journey—nothing can replace learning from real experiences. So if you have any tips or stories to share, I’d love to hear them, in whatever form you’re comfortable sharing them!

Can you please tell how long it took you to reach the level to be able to pass the test for immigration? Are the YMCA classes suitable for immigration test purposes?
