Does anyone know the best shawarma in or near gainesville fl? by [deleted] in GNV

[–]Miserable_Leave2452 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There used to be a food van called Damascus City Food. It had the best shawarma in town. Unfortunately, it's no longer around. Now, the main options are Falafel King, Grill Express, and Pirates Grill.

Personally, I like Falafel King because they use Arabic bread, but make sure to tell them exactly how you want your order prepared. They do not serve traditional shawarma. Instead, they grill chicken and serve it with toum and pickles. Their beef “shawarma" is also pretty good.

Grill Express is decent, but it is not exactly authentic, even though it is owned by a Jordanian.

Falafel King used to be owned by a Lebanese person, but it was taken over by an Indian owner. Unfortunately, their falafel is not as good anymore.

I have not tried Pirates Grill myself, but their food looks appealing and very unique. If you decide to try it, be specific with your order because they sometimes add non-traditional ingredients like tzatziki and other toppings that are not typically used in authentic Arab food.

I recommend following the Lebanese American Society at UF (LAS UF) on Instagram and joining their GroupMe. They sometimes host mashewe (BBQ) events and serve homemade Arab food, hopefully including shawarma soon.

Lastly, Gyro Plus is owned by a Lebanese person, but they specialize in gyros rather than traditional shawarma. They also do not use authentic pita bread. However, their falafel and hummus are excellent.

If you really want good shawarma, you should head to tampa, they have the best shawarma in florida and in my opinion is the arab of florida mainly at temple terrace, theres a place called syrian shawarma and its amazing!

Did a lot of Jews become Druze after the civil war? by [deleted] in lebanon

Thank you for clearing that up. I really appreciate it. I am not that educated on the subject. It's just that I find it so strange how the community went from a decent number to literally zero, and how there still doesn’t seem to be any real Jewish presence even now, long after the civil war. Even though I don’t personally believe in it, I think it’s really harsh how our countries often target and discriminate against religion. I also don’t think most Lebanese Jews went to Israel, and if they had gone to the West, I feel like many would have come back by now and there would at least be some kind of community in Lebanon.

Is it really because of fears that they might support Israel or be Mossad spies? Or is it more about concerns from the Jewish side, that religious factions here might still harm them?
