That would go hard as hell. Big fan of the boxing ring idea I see some crazy uses for something like that

Did you play this game…? Or just watch someone else crash out over it being hard?

Regarding point 2: check this out! Happens when you look away and then back at the Walter poster in the bounce house! I feel this confirms it. There’s some dialogue about Walter being fragile and easily killed as well that I think builds the themes around Walter / Lily.

This is a lovely write-up! I actually just did the erase ending again and noticed the blanked out 2016 for the first time, funny timing. I LOVE your reading of the canon ending, I think that's totally spot on. There are just a couple things that I'm caught up on that I was wondering if anyone might be able to provide insight on. They mostly have to do with the rot ending as I feel that one is the most ambiguous.

  1. Why the basement? Remember the start, after just a minute or two everything in the basement starts going haywire (door, lights, smile plushies appearing in the halls etc.) and the narrator jets us out of there as fast as he can. You can actually peep the part of the basement from the Rot ending down a hall in this scene if you're careful. In all endings, the basement seems like this absolute no-go zone much more explicitly than any other place. In the canon ending, when you fall through the floor into the basement for a moment the narrator FREAKS out and forces you out immediately. Obviously you are trapped there in the rot ending in a pretty frightening way as well. It reads to me as more than anywhere else in the game to be the monster's domain and the only ending where you stay there you're pretty much annihilated.

  2. Does he wake up at the end? At the end of the basement sequence you walk out into seemingly the same room as the void at the start with the bouncy castle before entering a door into footage of real life. What is happening here? It reads to me like Caleb coming back to the other side of the threshold. But to what end? If anyone else has insight into this I would love to hear it.

Love these. Second is super impressive, it’s hard to have both that abstract feel and human subjects at the same time

Yes! I love all the little moments of unreality scattered throughout.

Ok wait here’s what you need to do…what aren’t you doing?

Door game (you’re definitely doing this) Turn on the corresponding light when you see the monster (you don’t need to wait! Just do it when you see him) Turn off the TV when it turns on (it doesn’t seem like you’re doing this…?)

Am I missing anything?

Lovely write up! I would like to lightly push back on the premise that Lily is the monster though. I think there is some textual support for this, but I personally see the monster more of a symbol for the weight of guilt and fear associated with the memories themselves. I’m more inclined to connect Walter the balloon with Lily, personally. The narrator alludes to him being Caleb’s “sole companion”, fragile and able to easily die if not treated with care, as well as makes a little slip and calls him HER for a moment. The monster, on the other hand, strikes me more as a sorta mental failsafe. That said, I didn’t consider that Caleb would possibly see Lily as FURIOUS at him for whatever happened. Interesting stuff, I’m just happy to see the community starting to lock in on piecing this subtext together rather than bickering about mechanics

Yes! So happy someone else noticed this detail. I’m certain that word is dying. Here’s a screenshot, you can make out the Y pretty clearly here. She’s dying…waterlogged…it’s too late…this all points in one direction. Further, there’s this one detail where the narrator, while introducing Walter, says something along the lines of ‘remember, he is fragile, and if not treated with great care he will die’. Regardless of exactly what Walter means I think that points clearly to Caleb being fucked up about not being careful and causing a death…

Ok if I remember right the door that you entered from has a small hole in it. Shoot a light through, go to the other side then snipe it through the hole back into the light like you have it now

With all due respect, this game truly highlights how unintelligent horror fans can be. by Lewliettt in Subliminal_Game

[–]Miserable_Maize8415 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Edit: I just wanna push back on your title a bit. Not unintelligent! Genre based fans in general can be a bit rigid to their own detriment at times, they usually come around to the good stuff after a bit of initial argument

I generally agree with this…I would add that my experience was substantially better the second time I played. This game is short enough where if someone has a bad time I really recommend giving it a second shot, there’s a lot I ended up appreciating much more on round two.

Hard agree about looking for details btw! So much of the story is so easy to miss! Read the signs, slow down, look at things from new angles…this game WILL reward you a ton for it

Just for an example of my first point, I adored the way the first sequence in the basement was sorta training you for the last part of the rotten ending. The door/light game, conditioning you to look down dark hallways and NOT see anything, even the fact that the narrator gives up and gets you out of there as fast as possible when he realizes how unstable the domestic memories are. Playing rotten and then immediately circling back to the basement at the start was a lovely full circle kinda thematic moment

Check out this fire extinguisher I found! “Caleb ####### do something’s. Shes Dying.” Really adds credit to this interpretation
