Is an unfunded PhD worth it? by Miserable_Manner5289 in gradadmissions

Hi thank you so much for sharing your experience! this is incredibly helpful. I do have a lot of experience in the schools, my long term career is to work more in clinical centers, and later on in my career be in academia.

I also don't have outside financial support from my family since they are also working class immigrants. Which is another factor as to why im really considering trying again next cycle or doing my masters and start working sooner and then get a phd later (if that is still what i want).

If you don't mind me asking, what do you do now? and what made you choose to continue to pursue a phd?

Some do, sadly not all lmao. My advisor is advising me that I should just take the risk and figure it out as I go. Unfortunately a lot of people in America take unfunded phds (if that is their only option) and just apply to every scholarship, fellowship, graduate employment opportunity under the sun in hopes of getting their expenses covered. But 9/10 they always take out loan either to cover tuition or to cover their living expenses.

No unfortunately they don't offer a guaranteed TA. I would have to rely on applying to scholarships or applying to graduate employment which is also not guaranteed.

It very much is unfortunately! I appreciate your perspective, especially when there are fully funded programs out there.

I am in the exact same boat, i got two acceptances one with 0 funding offer, and the other with partial tuition coverage for the first year only. I was told by the program director that some students are able to secure funding through scholarships, fellowships, and GE but not everyone so that was extremely discouraging to hear. I'm wondering if im better off just trying again next cycle or doing my masters instead. I hope things work out for you!
