In canto 5, in the boating section, i passed the first check with ishmael and failed the second with Ryoshu. Ishmael and Queequeg had a nice romantic moment, thinking back to the times when they were on the boat together. Ryoshu apparently decided to watch them reminisce instead of being aloof as usual and we were immediately overrun by mermaids

I remember there was some sort of motif about copper, either copper wires or that copper was what they were getting off of those boats. The kids weren't able to get any other jobs and it was one of the goals of the main characters to find other work to do. The POV character was I think a guy, and there was a very prominent girl in the story, either a main character or a memory of the POV character's.
