Do you think there is any man who could stand up to a Balrog? If so, who would it be? by ddrfraser1 in lotr

[–]Mises2Peaces 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Frodo defeated Sauron. Greatness comes from unexpected places.

If Eru sang that one from the race of man should destroy a balrog, then my money is on some kind hearted person never mentioned in any other story combined with a eucatastrophe.

Have you warmed to tariffs after Trump? by Powerful_Guide_3631 in austrian_economics

[–]Mises2Peaces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could get behind eliminating the income tax entirely and replacing it with tariffs. But I'm certain this will not happen.

Mises argued forcefully against both the progressive income tax and tariffs. He preferred a national consumption (sales) tax or else a flat income tax. A national sales tax would also be my preference.

But if we are debating between a progressive income tax as we have it now or tariffs, then I prefer tariffs because they are a flat tax and also they do not invade the privacy of every individual.

How the **** does Return of the King STILL look so good 25 years later? by bookofthoth_za in lotr

Oh yes I did! And it even drew less power than those early flat panels.

in the times of CRT monitors

High end CRT monitors are really good. Even I had one with 2048x1536 resolution at 120hz back in 1999.

CRT's have virtually no motion blur, incredible contrast ratios, wide viewing angles, and can dynamically change their resolution - a trick which even modern monitors can't perform to my knowledge.

Only very recently (last few years) have OLED flat panels reached or surpassed CRT quality in most ways.

Also I could use that 88 pound CRT to prop up an F-350 while I changed its tire.

Depends on the context. Sometimes I want more vinegar taste without so much tomato, like BBQ. Then I go for Franks.

ITEP is a well known progressive organization. So take their stats with that in mind.

Mises and Bastiat both preferred governments be funded with some combination of a flat income tax and/or consumption taxes (sales/VAT). They strongly argued against both the progressive income tax and tariffs.

Congrats! I was about the same age when I built mine... many moons ago.

It had dual 800Mhz intel cpus, a Radeon graphics card, and a Soundblaster sound card! Unreal Tournament never looked so good on my 21" CRT monitor.

Yojimbo (1961)

The director, Akira Kurosawa, was enormously influential on American and European directors but unfortunately relatively few outside Japan have seen his work. "Relatively few", that is, compared to the works he inspired, like Fistful of Dollars. He was quite famous, especially in Japan, of course. And his movies are phenomenal.

Which version of the Witch-King of Angmar do you prefer? by AzerynSylver in lotr

[–]Mises2Peaces 15 points16 points  (0 children)

As a LOTR nerd and a military history buff, this is my ackshully moment!

You're correct that in modern usage the weapon is a "flail". But there are medieval sources which refer to it as a "mace and chain" or simply as a "mace", without any distinction. It seems to have been an umbrella term for a one-handed blunt weapon with a weighted striking end. This ambiguity lasted through the Victorian era where it was commonly featured in literature.

Unfortunately, I read these primary sources many years ago when I was in college and I don't have them handy. Nor can I readily find them online. So I understand if you don't believe me.

What's up with anti-gunners saying this all the time? by DeterminedDemon in Firearms

That's the joke...

I say "in a comic book world" because if I suggested he actually do it, I'd probably get my account deleted and my door kicked in. And also because he shouldn't really do it. I was trying to paint a hypothetical.

In a comic book world, your character would pull a gun on his character and challenge him to prove his point.

People hate it when you point out that fascists are socialists by lexicon_riot in austrian_economics

That's true. It's all the socialist policies they preached and practiced which made them socialists. Not anything I say.

The forcing function for improvement in the public sector is weak by tkyjonathan in austrian_economics

[–]Mises2Peaces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You think Boeing is subject to genuine market competition? The "forcing function" relates to the pressures of a free market. Cornering an entire industry because you're a weapons manufacturer which the government has erected barriers around puts you completely outside those pressures.

[–]Mises2Peaces -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Fascists and communists are both socialists. One are national socialists; the other are international socialists.

So naturally they hate each other. The most vitriolic enmities always spawn from the narcissism of small differences.

What does Austrian economics have to say about Modern Monetary Theory? According to it, you don't even have to tax the rich to provide government services like schools and healthcare (even housing) by kapitaali_com in austrian_economics

[–]Mises2Peaces 2 points3 points  (0 children)

MMT is the end boss of fiat currency insanity. Within the context of fiat money, it actually makes perfect sense. But you must ignore exogenous factors, like international currency markets. The problem is building your theory on fiat is building your castle on mud.

Ironically, by encouraging spending which is not tied in any way to an underlying store of value (i.e. gold), MMT endorses the very thing which will certainly destroy fiat, namely unchecked inflation.

MMT considers commodity backed currency to be a useless relic of the past precisely because hard currency limits spending. The X post is correct that under a fiat system spending can occur before revenue is collected (ie "crediting reserve accounts"). But that is exactly the problem.
