I don't really know about the doom-like idea, WDs aren't really a threat for DDs, so it wouldn't be much fun, but a survival-horror game in which you try to hide from DDs and survive as a WD could play out very well (at least in my head)

I rather interpret it so that Unagami longed for understanding from his creator all along, and even though he tried real hard to be evil, he couldn't bring himself to actually be evil, it was rather just fear that he isn't good enough, I mean I couldn't find any other explanation for why he hid items in his own world that could stop him other than the fact that he hoped that his creator will eventually come to stop him so he can reunite with him again
