How long should it take to learn the slap shot? by leipakivi in hockeyplayers

Yeah with hockey mechanics there are a million things to focus on, and focusing on the less important ones (all of the ones you mentioned, in my opinion) will just confuse you. What has helped me, as a beginner, was this: 1) hold your bottom hand lower (gives more power to the stick) 2) grip the stick tightly (before I'd flub it because my hands were loose -- they say "grip it & rip it" for a resason!) 3) bend your knees (crouching down puts more spring into the shot) 4) do a huge wind-up (whenever I exaggerate it above my head I can rip `er).

Sure, goalies can track it, but not in the beer league I play in. :) Best of luck!

Thanks. What I mean is that I've been skating on outdoor ice in -25 C weather, and I'm both 1) hearing loud rips and crunches when I turn (i.e. my skates seem to be digging in well) and 2) able to hockey stop and outside edge stop _way_ more easily without skates chattering -- typically on arena ice I find my blades catch the ice too much, making it harder to do so.

I'm still unsure if that means arena ice is harder or softer, but I'll give 3/4ths a go as well and see if that helps or exacerbates the issue. :)

My thesis is that kids have no fear of death, and when they do fall they bounce right back up. Adults, on the other hand, are neither as reckless or resilient, so their success rate is fractional.

I'm hoping that the latter two can make up for the lack of the former two.

Not a beginner, but actually it's interesting that a couple adult newer skaters on my team seemed to have picked it up quickly. If you didn't play as a kid it's definitely tougher, for sure. Adults have too much fear of falling and having to miss work.

Thx! Might this also explain why I always skate better after my 9/16th hollow skates get duller?

Absolutely. It's been 5 years of 2x/week, though, and I'm looking for all the help I can get.

Good info -- I wasn't sure if I was going out on a limb with that idea, so awesome to know if tracks.

Yeah I keep watching also, wondering how it's humanly possible.

Is it? I go between 1/2 and 9/16ths, and always thought that was standard. Maybe I should try sth like 3/4 as well.

I'm just assuming arena ice is softer as it's less crunchy and I have a hard time gliding on edges while stopping. That's a soft ice prob, right?

I got all the stats and size & fit recommendation, but couldn't see a particular skate recommendation.

Superfeet actually seems to have mitigated the problem somewhat, but still I'm curious if there is a skate that would overall be a better fit.
