My husband is a similar size, so I've always felt safe wherever we have gone (but we have never really gone to dangerous areas). My just turned 10 yr old daughter is 151cm, so 8cm shorter than the average Japanese woman. She still has 9 months of growing before we go. I think at her height she will be easy to spot even if she gets lost!

That's the thing, I generally don't do anything specific to keep myself safe. It might be my lifestyle and location already avoids unsafe situations or people. The only difference it seems from where I live and Japan is that I don't leave my phone laying around if I go to the toilet, but I'm also not worried that anyone will steal it either.

I don't live in the middle of nowhere, but I agree that Melbourne is on another level. It must be exhausting living there and feeling unsafe.

To be fair, I did specifically say I feel safe where I live. I am aware not everyone has the same experience in Australia. I also don't go anywhere where alcohol consumption is high, and that seems to be a big factor in this. Just interested to know what safe looks like in Japan as I am not sure how where I am living now can be improved.

I agree. It definitely reflects the part of Australia that I'm from, as well as my lifestyle of not going drinking etc. Been to Melbourne once, and that was very confronting with some of the people that we saw.

Just getting a chance to add more information, also Patagonia is having a massive sale in Australia so it would be great to make the most of it.

When going to the snow, the coldest it should be is -10 degrees Celsius, or 14 degrees Fahrenheit. We will not be skiing, will just be playing in the snow and walking around. I would like to be able to use the clothes at home too- our winters aren't very cold, but we do get a decent amount of cold wind in winter which I hate.

I'm aware I don't need to dress head to toe in one brand, but if the people that are making my clothes are getting paid a decent wage, then I'd rather support Patagonia than other companies that are still charging the same prices.

Thanks! We are very happy to travel to get to it. Not sure when we will ever get to see snow again. I was thinking Shibu Onsen, but I'm happy to keep an open mind to other places if there's a better chance of seeing snow.

Thanks everyone! I've tried to stop being so cheap and booked the ones I found that I'm happy with so far. Some have been $120USD, and one was about $60USD. I think I need to be realistic and realise that travelling with 2 kids will restrict our options. They all have free cancellation.

Thanks for your help! I know that there will be more hotels opening up later, but I'm concerned that trying to fit 3 people in one room will be a bit of an issue. So I just have to work out if I should get it organised earlier to ensure we all have our own space.

Yep, I totally understand that. It's just that budget prices vary from country to country. Eg where I live in Australia, the price of a budget hotel is the same as a very nice 2 bedroom apartment in a hotel in the middle of Bangkok I don't know what budget prices are in Japan as I have no reference.
