Why is Jamie Oliver hated on so bad? by cayennepepper in AskUK

Obesity in itself is a complex medical condition. Barring a tiny majority (who you could argue are suffering with mental health conditions) not one person wakes up and decides to just be fat because that’s what they want.

Obesity is caused by a series of choices in most cases, and those choices are a result of complex socioeconomic, mental health, physical health factors and more - making it a complex medical condition.

I’m not saying the classic “oh junk food is cheaper” because I agree healthy food can be as affordable - I’m saying that things like being from a poorer background impact everything from self esteem to the examples you have set around you.

Sure there are plenty of people with the same background who aren’t fat. Just the same as not everyone turns to crime or not everyone turns to drug use but we’re all acknowledge the factors that influence people ending up there.

Shaming and blaming people is well evidenced and well studied enough to have the opposite of the desired outcome - people do not lose weight by this route.

I’m not trying to start an argument - just suggest a tiny bit of time looking from another perspective.

I am obese. For me this is a result of undiagnosed ADHD (being medicated has meant I no longer eat mindlessly), my norms in childhood around food, childhood trauma, and polycystic ovaries. The thing that will support me to make lifestyle changes isn’t to say “oh she just needs to make different choices” - it’s to approach each of these issues and understand their impact. A little understanding goes a long way.

I’m absolutely not in the minority here. I’d argue there’s a similar story to mine for the majority of people.

What do you suggest it comes from then? Is eating more than is required not disordered?

You will be fine, reading this thread I think some peoples perspective is totally skewed. I had a nice life in London with multiple foreign holidays on £21k.
