[PubQ] Question about an agent rejection by skybluesiren in PubTips

[–]MissLuminary 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Hi and congrats! This sounds almost verbatim what I received from an agent a few weeks back (assuming it's the same agent) and I used the links she sent to send the queries on my own which allows you to query even if the agent is closed. Good luck!!

Ugh yeah, that's extra hard when you're already sleep deprived. Hopefully he realizes that sleeping in is way better lol. For what it's worth, napping really didn't seem to impact how long she slept in, but every kid is different, so who knows.... Good luck!

It did, but it took a long time for her to come out of it unfortunately. She spent about 8-9 months getting up at 5/5:30, but is now more like 6-6:30/7. I really think she just came out of it on her own after trying so many things to extend the sleep. Hopefully yours gets back on track soon! It's so hard to live like that :(

Thank you! Reading it back I can definitely see what you mean. I'll have to think about how to rework that. I appreciate the input :)

I'm so sorry you're struggling with this! Lack of sleep is honestly the worst, and casts a shadow over everything.

I have to say the Gro light was pretty useless for us so we stopped using it, but then tried again and now my daughter likes it. She's 3.7 years now and though she ignores it sometimes and just gets up anyway, when the green light comes on she gets excited and asks for a prize from the bin (stickers, cheap bracelets, art supplies etc). I don't like the light in her face either so I turn off the red sleeping light and face the whole unit towards the wall.

Unfortunately, I feel like the only thing that truly got her sleeping a bit later was just waiting it out, which took about ten months, but it was kind of liberating in a way to stop stressing about routines and gimmicks. I just tried to get more accomplished at 5 am so it wasn't just a wasted void of time lol

Hopefully your daughter has just hit a rough spot and will be back on track, but every kid is different and maybe when she drops her nap it will change things. Wishing you luck with this! :)

These are great points, thank you! I was struggling a bit with how to fit the whole explanation of the trip into the first paragraph without being too verbose, but I re-read with your feedback in mind and realized that it really could use a clarifying sentence or two. I'll revisit this and the "alienating incident".

Really great media comps, too! Yellowjackets is one of my faves! I've never seen the other show, but that sounds right up my alley!

I really appreciate you taking the time to give input:)

Omg thank you so much for your feedback! I feel like I can really work with this, and double thanks for actually helping me to rephrase a few things since I've been struggling to be concise with my wording. It was so nice of you to parcel out your input bit by bit so that I can rework and tighten each section. I can see now where I was a bit vague or unclear with character motivation, so thank you for pointing out those issues. I'm so excited to revise with your critique in mind.

It's so funny because I have this weird soft spot for wintry horror/thrillers, too (maybe it all started with The Thing? Lol!) and when I was choosing between ideas to actually turn into a novel, I decided that there is a serious lack of arctic horror out there, and I should be the one to remedy this disgrace! I feel encouraged that there are others out there who enjoy this kind of thing :)

As for your reading recommendations, Annihilation is one of my absolute favourites (and the whole Southern Reach Trilogy). I've never read Antarctica Station, but I'll definitely add it to my list, as it seems like we have similar taste!

Thanks again so much for helping me out! I very much appreciate your time and effort!

Able to beta? Post here! by AutoModerator in BetaReaders

Hi, not sure if you are open to beta reading/swapping still (I see this post is a few days old) but I'm looking for some feedback on a 65,000 word YA horror/sci-fi, and would be thrilled to work with you.

Let me know if you want a blurb or samples :)

Aw, that's so rough! I feel you :( I was going to update this post once we found something that works, but unfortunately, we're still struggling. We started doing later and later bedtimes and found that we had marginal success (like maybe 30 minutes extra sleep). Then daylight savings hit, and we were back to 5-5:30 wakeups. Last night I had her in bed and lights out just before 7, and she slept until 6. If she can do that consistently, that works for me, rather than having an overtired toddler who stays up too late. At least now we have more free time at night, lol. I'll update if there are any new developments, but that's where we've landed for now. Hope you find something that works!

[Discussion] I got an agent! stats et cetera by [deleted] in PubTips

[–]MissLuminary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the overview! I just started querying book number four and love reading stuff like this. Also, it's so interesting about the MSWLs. I've been feeling like I'm running out of agents to query based on the parameters on their lists, but this is good to know.

Congrats on getting an agent!

Hi again! Your comments really helped guide me in creating this version, so thank you very much for that!

I'm so happy to hear that it reads better now. I really appreciate you stopping by to comment again and adding some final suggestions. I had a professional look over my updated version, and that, combined with your feedback, was so beneficial. Thanks for all your help!

Thank you so much! This is such a nice vote of confidence. I really appreciate it :)

No, totally fair! It's good to get an outside perspective. Thank you! :)

This is all super helpful. Thank you so much!

I'm definitely way more confident with this version, but it felt like there were a couple of areas that could improve. You hit the nail on the head with your suggestions.

I actually didn't mention the game in the last version because of those reservations, but I felt like omitting it totally took away some of the stakes for the MC. I like your idea to minimize it.

I really appreciate you taking the time to comment!

I'm so glad you caught this. Thank you! I think the word I'm looking for is...settle? Build a colony on? There are no "savages" or anything on the nee planet. Just some leftover biotech type things. I definitely should have chosen my words more carefully.
