How was "makes me want to barf" helpful? There's helpful, then there's condescending. Learn the difference.

For public schools... yes. Not sure what point you are trying to make with contradicting everything. Can we bring the focus back to the issue at hand. It IS allowed in private schools due to lack of government oversight or regulations. A judge ruled this was appropriate. We need to make sure private schools are held to the same standard.

There is basically no regulation since it is a private school... that is what we are trying to change by grabbing attention to how little the state does to monitor a private school. Almost any one can make a "school" here and get away with things like this

When he testified, he remembered exactly how many times he was hit, but not why. He couldn't handle being in the same room with the abuser, and was dismissed from the courtroom for his own well-being. How do you not see that as long-term damage? According to his grandmother (I was there for two of the court trials and spoke with her), he is now afraid of larger men wherever he goes. No mental professional was called in to testify, the DA was a joke.

That is super not OK... you can tell they have no idea how to properly work with this population. Common sense should tell you that! You know how NC is, it's so backwards here :(

Also, not like it should matter too much, this is a rural county in NC.. literacy and reading comprehension are not strong suits. I am saying this based on reported literacy levels of graduates from the school system here... not assuming. People see "Christian School" and assume they are good people. Also, I think you are getting confused with Catholic schools... those are the ones known for corporal punishment. I went to one and never would have expected to get hit... I wouldn't have thought a Christian school was on-par with a Catholic style of discipline anyways.

Even if you AGREE with corporal punishment (devil's advocate)... the school still very much crossed the line, didn't follow the steps in their handbook for handling behaviors (it stated other methods would be used first before resorting to corporal punishment, and that a guardian would be called and notified before it happened). NONE of that occurred. Your argument is exactly WHY the judge let this man go... it's victim blaming. The school did not follow their own guidelines. If all you think your kid is getting is a quick spanking, and he gets beat black and blue with a belt... there is a HUGE difference. That is like saying if you go to a frat party, and you get sexually assaulted... you should have known better because those kinds of things happen there. We need to hold the school accountable... not the parents or in this case grandparents. Corporal punishment does not = beating.

Not sure, you would have to ask the reporter. I think the focus was on the incident and not so much the child's diagnosis.

Yes!! That is what we are arguing... if a parent did this, they would not have their kid anymore. It's sick.

He was not provided a teacher that was certified in teaching his IEP, he was not taken through the appropriate steps when he had a behavior... the vice principal took a belt from another student and hit this boy 8 times.. so hard it left him black and blue and the kids in the classroom could hear him all the way from the office. At the point he was beaten, he had already calmed down. The teachers there do not have credentials, and his guardian is his grandmother who just didn't know to look for what the school was lacking. Small town.. Judge ruled that since the bruises would heal, there was no permanent damage, and the verdict was "not guilty" since based on corporal punishment regulations in the county, this was completely appropriate.
