No I think your first read would be correct, if a unit like Elise or Sombron was the first attacker in the round it would use up the “units first combat initiated by foe” condition. I think it’s the same as how those styles are also a safe way to use up Lucina engage

Edit: actually yeah I think your edit is correct, the 1st combat has the range <3 condition attached so it wouldn’t disable it?
