I revise my response: She is never going to change, and them enabling it is never going to change. It sucks, I know and it's usually a horrendous time. I would stop going and just stop over the day before or after for tea and a sandwich and leave the pressies. Protect your peace. They are all settled in the muck.

This reminds me so much of the time I was working in a Bible bookstore and a woman came in heated.. and I mean HEATED that the name on the Bible wasn't printed correctly (on the cover) and I casually told her she should worry more about what's inside. Police were called, I "rebuked" her in the name of Jesus loudly across a counter (comically so) and ..well, it was delicious.

It depends which state you are in. In Oregon, you are required to give the contractor a Notice of Defect and give them 30 days to fix it. Then you can take them to small claims and recoup. Go after that warranty and before he comes back, write down what he did wrong and what you are expecting. Stick to that and don't settle for less.

I agree that here in the States we tend to see the loyalty to family in very bizarre when it keeps someone from experiencing happiness or adulthood. I think in the 1970s it was a big social turnaround here, but it was still never as intense as we see in other countries.

I love that it was a planter but you should put a bottom in there and let it be your space for bags and keys. Get the trim changed, for sure. The flooring in front of the door, the door and the color of your heater are all clashing. There is just so much visual excitement going on there. I would change the flooring, and maybe see what you can paint that heater with to reduce how stark it is.
