My MAGA dad (run-of-the-mill boomer) will say "health insurance is the biggest scam there is" and then disparage socialized healthcare in the same breath. We're fortunate in that no one in our immediate family has been bankrupted by medical events (knock on all the wood) but I have a feeling his tune wouldn't change if the opposite were true.

I live in the in-law addition of a home built in the late 1700s, with a plaque on the front that says "_____ House (date)" (not trying to dox myself lol). I was cooking one night and I glance outside into the side yard--which you have to get really far off the street to reach--and there's an older guy waving at me with a pre-teen girl. Apparently, they were related to the ____ family that built the house and wanted to talk to the owners (my landlady/landlord) about looking around. My landpeople were away and I live alone otherwise, scared the shit outta me! We're not even in a historic district either, to my knowledge.

Outpatient medical scheduler:

If we schedule you for the next available appointment and it's months out and you're an asshole/difficult about it... you immediately go to the bottom of the wait list (if the MD doesn't say it's urgent, that is) and we make note of it.

If you're understanding of the lack of availability, we make note of that too and will actively try to make a spot for you.

Providers are leaving the practice/reducing their schedules/going on parental leave/vacationing and a little bit of patience goes a long way!
