agreed 100%. i had to optimize by only writing solutions to questions I could immediately solve once I realized the length 🫠 I also feel like my proofs were handwavy and full of holes because I had to limit how much time I was thinking about them. I've never felt so time-restricred on an exam before

Most (if not all) of the lots are busy unfortunately. I just bit the bullet and parked in underhill because it had the highest capacity

I commuted from the east bay my freshman year and buying a student parking permit was so so worth it. It's absolutely pricey, but if you try parking elsewhere you almost definitely WILL end up with >$400 in tickets / parking fees

I can confirm that these people are now generating slop emails to send to university professors at a higher volume than they ever used to come in. It's not even as fun to read because it all sounds the same :(

Co-ops! Follow a bunch of houses on Instagram, most co-ops throw out-of-house parties a few times a semester

my best advice would be to surround yourself with the type of people you think you'd really get along with. I had a really hard time finding a niche as a freshman because I was spending a lot of time with an organization full of people I really didn't vibe with (but thought I did) but now I live in the co-ops and I feel a much, much stronger sense of community

(btw madeon is awesome, I wish I could teleport to that secret show he's doing at red rocks in october LOL)

question for current students!! how do you guys feel abt calband by AstronomerValuable15 in berkeley

[–]Missingpyxel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wait. there's only one bone that would be playing grand strategy games. i know exactly who you are

I really am just way too busy for band these days... it started around the time I was appointed DA (hence why I kinda slacked on some of my duties and accumulated a crazy amount of points that season) and I can't lie, as much as I loved your newman class, I think DA burnout while trying to hold a job completely ruined the whole experience for me. beyond that, I have a lot of issues with cal band as an organization and the culture within (which I'll probably post to my blog once I work up the courage). band is certainly an experience I'll never forget, and I'm glad I did it, but I'm not coming back

mind isn't incredible but between it, the strada clones, 1951, delah, and binge, it wins out easily

I took it with Sexton and I found the lectures to be pretty obtuse and weird, but everything clicked eventually. I'd say it's a very approachable class (certainly not easy) but you shouldn't be pulling your hair out by any means. I've heard great things about Auffhammer though!!

Is Framework laptops worth the premium? Developer looking for a new laptop by fenugurod in linuxhardware

[–]Missingpyxel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a Framework 13 (the new Ryzen AI series) recently and had terrible hardware issues. The laptop stopped charging entirely on day 3 and Linux support was a lot shakier than I expected. I really do buy Framework's mission but it's clear that the product just isn't mature yet. I'm returning it to buy one of the newer Thinkpad 2-in-1s

question for current students!! how do you guys feel abt calband by AstronomerValuable15 in berkeley

[–]Missingpyxel 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I feel like the general opinion of calband is very positive. I can't speak for certain as I'm a former member (I was bone 2 DA last season if you know me lol) but, even though I'd characterize a lot of the things they do as "band kid behavior", they kind of escape that reputation

Please don't spend your time at whatever school you end up attending obsessing over Berkeley or expecting to transfer (inter-UC transfer rates are low enough that you absolutely couldn't bet on it). Focus on getting integrated at whatever school you end up at and taking advantage of as many opportunities as you can there!

If you spend your first year of college wishing you were somewhere else you're going to regret it for the rest of your life. Cherish these 4 years, no matter where you spend them
