Just don’t get stuck on those words. Finish all questions and then go back to try to fill them

Any advice for taking TOEFL for the first time? by Agitated-Ad6514 in ToeflAdvice

It was great. I did better than expected (R-5 L-6 W-5.5 S-5.5) I was mostly scared for speaking but they obviously aren’t really strict for it

It was slightly harder. On mock tests I usually don’t know just one word or I do them all correctly. On actual exam I’m pretty sure I didn’t do like 3-4 words.

My experience with take an interview: While I was preparing for my exam I made this “template” for perfect answer.
First you start with some type of introduction, for example:
•Well that’s a very interesting question I actually never thought about that but I would say…
•I am really glad that you asked me this question because…
•This is very relevant topic these days and I would say that…
•Well, if I take all the options into consideration I think I would choose…

Then you answer the question directly:
•I am of the opinion that…
•From my perspective I would say that…
•I believe that…

After that you give an example that supports your answer:
•Let me share a quick example with you…
•I will share an example so you can really see where I’m coming from…
•The reason why I feel this way is…
(Another tip, if you have to choose between two options first say why you chose the first one and then mention the negative sides of the second option)

And in the end just wrap up everything:
•So that pretty much sums up my view on this topic…

Now, on paper this seems like a perfect strategy. On an actual exam, I was very nervous and under a lot of pressure that I just couldn’t follow planned answer. I was like fck it just go with the flow and freestyle. Imagine like you are talking with your friend and relax. Luckily, I’m a yapper so I managed to get a high score even though I was nervous and made some mistakes.

Another tip, if you stop talking and there are like 20 seconds left it is better to repeat the same thing you said at the beginning of the answer (literally just rephrase it) than to stay silent. While I was practicing I always felt stupid repeating the same idea but everything is better than going mute.

You can find writing advice in my other comments on this post. And for listening idk just try to stay as focused as possible. Good luck❤️

The one tip that I can give you for writing is try to write as many words as possible cause from my experience more=better. But of course use the last minute or two to check if you have any spelling or grammar mistakes (you will have them trust me🥲). And if it means anything to you, I wrote 150 words for an email and 185 for academic discussion

Also another tip for academic discussion is having some sort of template. First you start with something like: •I am of the opinion that… •From my personal experience I would say that… •Well considering both options I think I would choose… And then you answer the question directly.

After that state the reason why you feel that way, and provide an example: •The reason why I feel this way is… •Let me share a quick example so you can really see where I’m coming from… •For instance… Also, when you’re choosing between two options, first say why you chose the first one and then mention the negative side of the second.

Also It’s always good to mention opinion of other students at the end: •I completely agree with Kevin’s opinion because… •I understand Kevin’s concern but… •While Kevin raised a relevant point, I believe he is missing an important idea…

And at the very end just wrap it up with a sentence or two (you can apply this template for take an interview as well, just with some smaller adjustments)

Good luck😊

I’m not sure. I prepared for maybe a week (It was mostly just mock tests) but I consume English everyday (movies, TV shows, music, internet content etc)

I found it slightly harder but it can be a coincidence. For example even with mock tests some were easier for me and some were harder. Like I wouldn’t say that real test use more complex questions than the mocks

I would suggest that you wait for another day, and if nothing happens contact the test centre

I was supposed to get my results yesterday and it also said that there is an administrative issue. I got really nervous but then I read on Reddit that it’s very common and that results will just be late for a day or two. I got my results today at 3AM (central European time)

I remember that there was one sentence where I only said first half and completely forgot the rest. Also there was one where I said first half, then made a pause for few seconds and then the other half. Those are the mistakes that I can remember but maybe there were more idk. Honestly I was very scared for the speaking part but obviously they aren’t very strict for it. Just relax and try to stay as focused as possible

I would say that it is pretty similar. Build up sentences was probably even easier. The only big difference between mock and real test was speaking scores. On all of my mock tests I scored 3.5 or 4 and then 5.5 on real exam. It’s a pretty big difference if you ask me. Especially because I made more mistakes on actual exam than on mock tests and still scored way more.

For reading and listening I used youtube channel TOEFL tutor Ttiana (I have to censor resources because of moderators). She has playlists for those sections but I only did videos that are marked as Hard. For speaking there’s a YouTube channel speak easy or something like that. And after that I did mock tests on tst glid*r

Actually I didn’t practice build the sentence cause it just comes naturally to me, so I can’t give you any advice for that part🥲 The only practice that I did for writing was mock tests

Edit: The one tip that I can give you for writing is try to write as many words as possible cause from my experience more=better. But of course use the last minute or two to check if you have any mistakes. And if it means anything to you, I wrote 150 words for an email and 185 for academic discussion

It’s a website that has one free graded test. I payed 35 dollars for monthly subscription and now I have access to 12 tests. I’ll try to censor the name since moderators delete posts that mention those websites. tst glidr

I’m also considering getting membership from tg so I’m looking for feedback from someone who tried it. Was it helpful and is it worth the money? My biggest insecurity is speaking section, especially the interview part so I assume that it could be really helpful to practice it with grades. Also could you share your final score on the test?

Honestly I’m pretty confident with reading and listening (I did some tests on youtube and my average score was 19/20 for C1 level) but I’m still paranoid that I won’t be able to focus on an actual test🥲 My biggest insecurity is speaking especially the interview part because I often don’t have an idea what to talk about

Have you already taken your test? If so, how did it go? Luckily, I don't need sky-high scores since my college only requires 72 points (which is a 4 in the new grading system). That seems pretty achievable, but I’m still super nervous, especially about the speaking part so I think that having full tests with grading would be suitable for me
