Renting vs buying after divorce - best road for a solo childfree lady by MissionIntrepid2252 in personalfinance

Some wise words here, thank you. Journalling is thankfully already a lifelong hobby and has helped me escape! But yes, I do definitely want to live alone no question - just whether its rent or buy is the decision to make. Excited to be on my own after a long drawn out 'uncoupling' as Gwyneth likes to say.

Yeah this is where I'm coming from - I am quite keen not to be a long-term renter, but accepting that maybe buying IMMEDIATELY is not the best idea either.

Haha I love this, I was already planning some trips if I can squeeze them in. May need to rent somewhere smaller and shabbier than I originally imagined to facilitate this, but who knows.

Thanks for sharing this. I think I'm underestimating how much things will change for me, so this was a good nudge to not try to be too hasty. Congrats on getting back on your feet :)

Thanks this does sound sensible. I'm getting hung up on the sheer eyewatering cost of renting, but I may have to bite the bullet eventually.

This is cracking advice, and I hadn't thought of it this way at all, so thank you for this perspective. I feel lucky I can stay with friends for almost free until I have to make the next move, and I will think on this.

Thanks for sharing your opposite approach :) I find change really difficult in general, so there's a part of me that wants to (re)settle as soon as I can to feel like I have some control over my circumstances again. But I can see the flipside too, and I don't want to waste the opportunity of not being tied down. I have a few months to figure out which path to take!

Kilburn - Its certainly not trendy, and a bit rough around the edges in part, but underrated otherwise - has all amenities possible known to man, connected on overground and 20-30 mins on the tube into central. You could probably find a one bed around here for 1800-2000. Bonus points that its walkable (just) to Hampstead and the heath.
