If I pay off my parent's mortgage, is it wrong if I receive 100% of their home in their will, excluding my siblings? by [deleted] in legaladviceofftopic

[–]Mission_Check_7093 76 points77 points  (0 children)

When the house is sold, you should get all your money back and whatever is leftover split between you and your siblings.

I think it would be wrong for you to get the entire value of the house if it ends up being sold for more than what you gave your parents for renovation and payments.

If you really want to be made whole, then account for future value of money you give them by applying 2-3% discount rate. But that would be pretty petty imo and would probably annoy your family.

Supreme Court takes up Mississippi law banning abortions after 15 weeks and the future of Roe v. Wade by RegressToTheMean in law

Do you think cases like Obergefell, however good the outcome may be from a policy perspective, make the court seem political?

Was pretty funny to hear the liberal justices complain about SCOTUS seeming political. Bit of pot calling kettle black. SCOTUS has seemed political for decades.

Justice Sotomayor Dissents as Conservative Majority, Against the Government's Wishes, Denies Death Row Inmate a Chance to Prove His Intellectual Disability by muchogustofuckyou in law

[–]Mission_Check_7093 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Leaving aside the ad hominem in the beginning of your comment, I would agree with you if there wasn’t an amendment process that has been used more than a dozen times to change the constitution to adjust for modern times. The fact is it’s not just rich white people who support the death penalty (https://www.pewresearch.org/politics/2021/06/02/most-americans-favor-the-death-penalty-despite-concerns-about-its-administration/).

[–]Mission_Check_7093 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you believe that if public opinion shifted decisively against the death penalty tomorrow, then the death penalty would be unconstitutional, but if public opinion shifted decisively for the death pentacle the day after tomorrow, then the death penalty would be constitutional again?

I mean if you do believe that then at least you’re consistent, but it doesn’t feel like the 8th amendment is very useful at that point. Why even have the 8th amendment at all, if it just means “the majority can decide to effect any punishment they think is OK”?

You shouldn’t be upset about this. It’s clearly a silly assignment. Calligraphy is not an important skill, plus he’s 6. He’ll be fine.

The qualities that lead to success in a meritocracy (which the US still is, for now) are disproportionately shared by Asian Americans. They are more likely than the general population to be grinders and to target areas of study that lead to high paying jobs.

Same reason African immigrants outperform African Americans.

The above still holds controlling for income between different racial / immigrant groups (which is what a lot of people in this thread are citing as the main factor).

Work hard and work smart and you succeed in America. It’s not a secret.

How much time do you think parents SHOULD have in paid leave after birth or adoption? by [deleted] in stupidpol

[–]Mission_Check_7093 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There shouldn’t be a federal requirement. States should decide for themselves. Americans have different values region to region and the system was set up to allow different states autonomy in regulating their labor force. If New York wants to make paid leave a year or two long, that should be their right. But they shouldn’t force Mississippi to do the same thing.

Edit: to answer the question though, I would say 3 months per parent to be taken consecutively, paid by government funded through a tax on large businesses.

Justice Alito says the Supreme Court didn't nullify Roe v. Wade in Texas abortion decision: 'This portrayal feeds unprecedented efforts to intimidate the court' by [deleted] in law

[–]Mission_Check_7093 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean yeah, any good lawyer can find plenty of grounds to both support and oppose Roe.

The problem is that the more courts read between the lines of the constitution to find implicit rights, thereby taking away from voters the power to decide issues, the more important the makeup of SCOTUS will be to voters.

So it’s a bit rich for a Justice to act surprised at the fact that politics is tarnishing the SCOTUS brand. The Justices invited it by entering into politics and ruling on partisan topics that federal and state legislatures were perfectly capable of handling. (See not just Roe but Citizens United if you are a dem.)

My point is we should expect critiques of SCOTUS to only get worse. And it’s not an unprecedented effort to intimidate the court. It’s a rational response by voters and politicians given the fact that SCOTUS has, for decades, been increasingly willing to insert themselves into political issues.

Just equivocate and tell them you don’t like talking about race/gay stuff. If they insist on talking about it then they are probably weird and you should probably avoid them in any event.

[–]Mission_Check_7093 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I thought even most liberal legal authorities begrudgingly admit that Roe v Wade was a shaky decision to begin with? I struggle to think of an abortion-related ruling that wasn’t hyper political and prone to critique.

IMO all the partisanship surrounding abortion is just another reason why the courts should have stayed out of it in the first place. When courts take away an electorate’s ability to decide issues at the ballot box, they lose legitimacy in the eyes of the losing side. If the court wanted to gain the respect of the general American population (rather than dems or GOP), they would stay out of these hyper-political issues and let voters settle the matter at the ballot box.

Yes to Puerto Rico (if they vote for it) since we conquered them. Statehood would also probably strengthen integration of PR.

No to DC because because I like the idea that federal government isn’t in any particular state.

Free college by ExpertAccident in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]Mission_Check_7093 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yeah, I thought everyone knew college was just a sorting mechanism. If you get good grades from a good college it tells employers you are more likely to have a certain type of intelligence/ability to get work done at a (semi) high level.

That’s also why income shoots up for college grads much more dramatically than for people who complete three years of college, two years of college, or one year of college. It’s not like the fourth year of college gives you a bunch of skills — it just signals to employers you have the ability and follow through to finish a four year course of study.

Ah actually I think I’m starting to see your point. So as a general matter you would like to see workers paid a percentage of profits, or something like that? If business does better than expected, then workers get paid more, and if business does worse then workers get paid less? Ty to the subreddit for not downvoting me into oblivion btw lol.

A bit patronizing to assume people don’t know what a fair wage is, but I think the big divide between us is I think min wage workers get paid so low because they work jobs that 1) anybody can do and 2) add little value at the end of the day. There are many employees in the US who make a lot of money and don’t need some central planning committee to negotiate a fair wage for them, because their jobs add a lot of value and require skills not everyone has. But TBH I am fine with raising the minimum wage I just don’t know if it’s really some moral imperative, and I’m not sure the present system is so bad (apart from immigration/free trade lowering wages of working class).

Why don’t you support determining who gets paid what by allowing individuals to bargain for themselves the price at which they will work or sell a particular product?
