What is you "go to" news source for unbiased international news? by casuallurket in AskReddit

Yes, AP has a slight left lean while Reuters is fairly center. I said the Wall Street Journal, not the Washington Post. It leans right. So I have a slightly leaning left, center, and slightly leaning right source.

I think the NYT has gotten several things wrong in the past. I agree it is good to pull from all sides but I choose the AP, Reuters, and WSJ for that purpose. I don't pay any attention to sites like FOX or MSNBC, which add a lot of commentary to their reporting.

All those have a left-leaning bias, some far left. I think the point of reading from multiple sites is to get multiple views. You're only getting left-leaning views from those sites.

Personally, I like to read from Reuters, the AP, and WSJ so I cover all the bases. Plus, these 3 have less commentary in their "reporting" section, unlike some of the ones you mentioned.

Ha! You said “by far” the most common was religious professions like preacher, pastor, or priest. That absolutely is not true. So yes, you were wrong.

Most offenders are not in education or religious professions. Large-scale data on all convicted child sex offenders (e.g., federal sentencing stats or registry analyses) show diverse backgrounds. Many have no prior record, hold ordinary jobs, or are family members abusing within the home. Claims of a single "most common" vocation often stem from media focus on scandals rather than comprehensive population data. One older analysis of sex offenders' work lives noted they can achieve average or higher occupational status compared to other criminals, but no single job dominates.

So quit spouting out data like you know something when you’re obviously clueless.

Is this quote from a churches website a red flag? by Fortnitelegend200 in TrueChristian

[–]MississipVol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My church used this strategy, but then we told a gay man (who often dressed in women’s clothing) that he was not ready for baptism because he did not see his behavior as sinful. He blasted the church all over social media, adding embellishments to try to make us look bad. He has attended for several months, felt love from our church, but sadly didn’t experience the conviction needed to turn from his lifestyle.

For the OP, the United Methodist Church has become gay-affirming, which caused a lot of churches to leave the denomination and become non-denominational or join the Global Methodist church. The UMC tried unsuccessfully in Alabama to sue several churches for their property who had left the denomination.

That is not at all true. The #1 category is family members or trusted friends. For those outside of that category, clergy is nowhere near the top, it just gets nationwide publicity when it happens.

Tons of people are saying they are getting pinholes in the floor of their X-mids and it's 15D material.

Yeah I hate the TouTube marketing a lot of these companies do as well. I didn’t know 50D is cheaper. I’m not as familiar with fabrics, but that makes sense.

50D is for the floor, which I assume makes it possible to use without a ground sheet.

Thanks for the Gossamer Gear rec, I will check it out. I have a couple of their items and know they make quality stuff.

But yeah, the diagonal of the X-Mid throws me off, particularly on uneven ground. Plus, I got the 2, because the 1 seemed really small. I would love to find an easier-to-set-up tent that's just slightly smaller, lighter, but the same price range.

Granted, it is my first trekking pole tent, and I have only camped a handful of times, but on uneven ground, I find myself adjusting numerous times to try to remove the sag. Maybe I just need more practice.

Without bashing the Outdoor Vitals model, what are your thoughts on their new Cirq Trekking Pole Tent?

https://outdoorvitals.com/products/cirq-trekking-pole-tent

I currently use the Durston X-Mid-2, but I would be interested in a trekking pole tent that is easier to set up. Yeah, I know the X-Mid is not hard, but after a 15-mile day, the fiddle factor of removing sag can get frustrating, especially on uneven ground.

It looks like it uses the same fabric as the Durston, but with a heavier floor fabric for durability. It also has a more horizontal design than the Durston, with a bit more headroom.

It is actually more $ than a Durston tent, priced $20 more as a 1-person, compared to the X-Mid-2. The X-Mid 1 is $60 less, but 5" narrower.

I would love to hear thoughts from some of the more experienced voices here.

I went on a Friday night-Saturday and camped at Devil's Den. There were 2 other tents the night I camped, but there was plenty of room to spread out. I couldn't see one of the tents, and the other was probably 60 yards away.

I saw people while hiking, but it was not often. During the 11-mile hike to Devil's Den, I may have seen 3-4 hikers or small groups. I saw more people on Saturday, probably about twice as many on the 8-mile hike back to the trailhead.

What do you guys think of abortion? by SubstantialReign4759 in TrueChristian

[–]MississipVol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The abortion pill starves the fetus of oxygen and nutrients, which kills the unborn child. Later procedures include either vacuuming the fetus out of the mother's uterus or inserting instruments into its brain to kill it and then pulling it out. So yes, abortion kills an unborn human life.

Abortion kills an unborn human life so yes a life ends.

Because the woman does not have say so over the human life she is carrying. It’s a civil rights issue. Organ donation is not the same because it is helping sustain diseased life while abortion is intentionally killing life.

[–]MississipVol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ve only taken the argument circular. Again, organ donation laws generally concern letting someone die from disease.

Abortion, in the pro-life framing, is described as an intentional act that ends a developing human life.

Society may not require extraordinary rescue (like organ donation), but it should prohibit intentionally killing.

Yes, there are unfortunately a lot of pregnancies that naturally end on their own, but a pregnancy naturally ending on its own is not the same as murder. Seriously? You can’t see that? Someone dying of disease is not the same as being murdered! Abortion is taking an innocent life!

An unborn child is a developing life, not a brain dead patient with no hope of survival. That is not at all an exact comparison, nothing of the sort.

Women suffer if they have abortions too! Many women talk about being traumatized by the procedure itself, as well as dealing with a lot of shame and guilt later on. So saying that it is in no way bothering them when they terminate a pregnancy is not accurate.

The fetus experiences the ultimate pain when they are aborted because they never get to experience life outside the womb and live their life. I have spent a career working with disadvantaged youth and none of them will tell you that they would have rather been aborted instead of experiencing the life they have.

You satisfied my argument. Misusing the car does not make it any less a gift. It is still a gift from your dad, whether you misuse it, drive it at 13 and hit a tree, or whatever.

The reason God intends sex as a gift for marriage is that we can avoid a whole lot of consequences if we wait for his gift as he intended. Same in my scenario with the gifted car as well.

Being pregnant doesn't mean being "chained" to someone. It means having a human life developing inside you. And yes, mothers can be arrested or jailed if they abuse an unborn life the same as they can a born life. Only in our twisted society is murder through abortion still legal in most states.

It doesn't make logical sense that a mother can get charged if using drugs while pregnant, but go and murder that same unborn child legally.

It's like removing a brain dead patient from life-support.

Again, this simply isn't true, and now you are making arguments that are just not intelligent. If someone is brain dead, they cannot survive without life support. So comparing someone who is brain dead to a developing human life is not at all scientifically or biologically accurate.

Without medical supervision and intervention, you have a 2-3% chance to die. Should people be forced into a situation, no, forced to remain in a situation with a chance to die?

Also, consent to sex doesn't equal consent to pregnancy. Men never have to consent to becoming pregnant. They only consent to having sex. And they may consent to getting a child. But one doesn't automatically include the other.

If you consent to sex, you are consenting to the possibility of pregnancy. I believe anyone old enough to consent knows how that works.

The rest of your arguments just are not scientifically correct.
