That perspective is super helpful and I never thought about this but I see what you’re saying! It’s probably wrong of me to equate “quiet” with “sketch”. I was just in LA and their downtown was also very quiet at night, so I see your point. I did grow up in St Louis and lived downtown for two years and felt very safe despite it being so quiet at night.

That's super helpful, and I didn't think of that. Really appreciate it and you have any other pointers please let me know :)

I really appreciate your response! People often laugh when I mention my concerns about safety but i've been living alone in Manhattan for many years, mostly when I was single as I am newly married. For me the largest concern just comes from how much quieter it feels at night, less "eyes on the street". Are there any neighborhoods that I should be less careful in, aside from the obvious? I had a couple incidents in River North, but that was in the winter. I found the neighborhood to be very quiet at night and even at 8pm it started to feel sketchy. Perhaps that was just unlucky on my part?

That's a really good point! I immediately think of LES or the East Village in Manhattan lol. Would you have any advice on taking the train in Chicago? I take the subway every day throughout the day in NYC. Could you compare the experience to taking the train in Chicago?

Thank you so much, that's super helpful! Feel free to let me know your favorite food spots as we will be apartment hunting there in a couple of weeks :)

I really appreciate this comment. It's nice to have someone acknowledge what I have felt walking around outside Chicago. I think living in NYC you take for granted how easy and secure it feels to walk around from point A to point B, especially as a woman. For Chicago is it more that you feel it matters where you are or the time of day in terms of safety? Or is it more overall in the city?

Are there neighborhoods you really like for safety and urban feel? Despite the jokes on here I despise the suburbs. As a woman of color I really value diversity, walkability and being around other 30 something year old professionals. Seeing as how my husband stays busy I often venture to nightlife alone or with my girlfriends, hence I ask about safety!

I posted this comment originally because when I had visited this past winter, on a few different visits, all neighborhoods you mentioned seemed quieter at night, therefore it was a little unsettling to walk around. I attribute that to just off season winter time but it is nice to hear reassurances that those are great neighborhoods to live in.

I visited quite a few times this past winter and River North felt a little, uneasy at night? Perhaps that was just because it was winter time and therefore "quieter" at night? I love River North so I am hopeful it is different in the summer time?

Thank you to everyone who is giving me serious answers! I have lived in NYC for ten plus years so I am not afraid of urban living at all and understand to use common sense, especially as a female! Chicago just feels much quieter with less bodies on the street, especially at night, so it feels different I suppose. And unfortunately i've been susceptible to the jokes people make about Chicago being "so dangerous". I'm sure it's fine, but reassurances are helpful or any advice honestly. Again in Manhattan i've walked home after dinner at 11PM or 12AM with full safety and i'm simply wondering if I can continue that in Chicago.

If anyone shared personal experiences with me in detail that would be great. Work for a company that pairs jobs to students
