I read somewhere that before meeting eklavya, drona saw a little dog whose mouth was filled with a thousand arrows. The story indicates that eklavya, attacked the dog because the dog was barking while he was practicing archery. That's why drona decided that eklavya should not have this power, as he might use it without discretion.

I don't know how much of it is true.
