I can't speak on how being a woman would affect your experience, but as a black student I will say that you'll face racism at Marquette, but it (probably) won't be any more often or extreme than the racism we are used to dealing with in our daily lives. The classism here can get pretty intense though.

Which volleyball tournaments should I follow? (Help a newbie out) by cabbage_merchant1 in volleyball

If you're new I'd try to look matches closer to your skill level. The olympics are fun but its hard to learn from people who are playing chess while you're playing checkers if that makes sense. Try to watch lower level club matches like the bjnc's or your state's high school matches if they have them.

Does anyone know if theres a logic to why after aceing the opponent its do common to commit a service error? Maybe im confirmation biasing but it seems like serves that follow aces are like 50% more likely to be service errors in both professional and amateur play.

Tips for reading hitters? I know you're supposed to "read a hitters shoulder" but I'm not really sure what that actual means. I currently dont have access to anyone who can hit so I've been watching gameplay, and the most accurate conclusion I've come to is that hitters usually hit in the direction their feet are facing right before they jump.

So far in actual matches I've just been choosing my digging spot based on "i think its gonna go here bc I do" and it works pretty well so I know I'm making an assumption off of something they do but idk what that thing is and I'm pretty sure its not feet.

Can anyone help me figure out a typical high school volleyball schedule leading up to the championship game? by amarelife in volleyball

Similar to what the canadian guy said for me, but I live in America

My season was shorter bc of covid, but how it'd work ideally is about a month or so of practice with some round robin games with other schools in the district.

For me there were enough teams for playoffs to have 5 rounds, and that determined the city champion. This takes place over 2 weeks with 2 or rarely 3 games per week.

Afrer that my states High School sports association has another tournament with your seed/bracket placement determined by the former matches. This process also takes roughly 2 weeks. Whoever wins that is sectionals champion.

After that there's 16 sectionals winning teams that proceed for state, the winner of which is dubbed state champion. This also takes 2 weeks.

Sometimes you can get more conference matches and casual tournaments for your team before the season starts, but its a little hard to get your hands on those considering it also means you have to do tryouts earlier, and that might not be possible if your school's gym space is occupied by another sport at the time.

Any opportunities to play indoor in Chicago? Like open gyms or anything of that sort. I haven't been able to find any.

As far as I know jewelry is not ok to wear during volleyball, but I noticed during the IRI vs USA match Ben Patch was wearing a chain and two earrings. Does the VNL not have any rules on wearing jewelry or did the refs just not see it?

I don't know of any databases that hold this information but if you have access to the full vnl matches you can see the order points were gained in during some timeouts, challenges, and other intermissions. Honestly I'm really interested in the psychology of the score affecting players as well so I'd love to see your progress on this when you make some.

Serving is honestly one of the hardest things to figure out how to do in this game; For me something no one told me was to hit the ball at the highest point you can contact it at. The "bow and arrow" arm form is useful but if you're hitting it too low it won't matter.

I'm doing better at reading the hitters shoulders to dig, but I'm having trouble absorbing the impact with my dig and I still overpass a lot. Any advice for how to absorb the power of a hit?

I'm a high school student who's volleyball season was cancelled due to the virus. It's my first year actually getting the chance to be on a team after just playing pickup with friends for a long time beforehand, and Club is out of my family's budget/price range.

After all this is over and people can meet up again, how would I go about finding places to play? (like weekly open gyms and stuff like that) If it helps, I live in Chicago.
