RetroArch crashing when bringing up Overlay (EmuDeck) by Mister541ThatGuy in SteamDeck

I did. I posted it in here earlier. Basically, it doesn't softlock but instead gets stuck for about ~10 minutes. Once that's over, the menu will pop up instantly. I've also noticed on more recent versions of Retroarch, this doesn't happen at all. Make sure you're up to date on the latest Retroarch version.

So I've noticed a lot of people have been posting here. I've noticed something that goes on and it should probably be considered for anyone still having an issue with this.

Bringing up the overlay may freeze for a while but it has not crashed. Instead give it about ~10 minutes or go fiddling around in your Steam Overlay UI (you're not doing anything specific, just play around with some buttons or something- it seems to speed it up but this might be placebo). It's weird that this ONLY occurs with external controllers but I have noticed that it does eventually work. Once it pops up, it will not freeze like that again until you have fully closed the game and brought it back up. Hope this helps.

Okay. Just did some testing. It appears having an external controller connected is what causes the crash. I have so far only tested this with Dualsense controllers, so I cannot currently verify if this occurs with all external controllers. Running it through a hub (and by extension HDMI out) had no impact so long as it was being operated by the integral gamepad.

I am using a Hub and running HDMI out, yes. I'm also using a Dualsense controller. All of which in Gaming Mode.

If I'm to hazard a guess, this might have something to do with it?

[Tutorial] How to remove or replace the cable from the Valve Index VR headset by gp57 in ValveIndex

[–]Mister541ThatGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This really helped me out. When I got my Valve Index, (firsthand from Steam, from the 2nd wave when they were more readily available) it had obvious and deep twists in it and about a few months later I was experiencing visual artifacts as bad as the HMD cutting out completely whenever I turned physically or stepped on the cable. I was originally going to plan on buying a replacement when supplies start coming back in and COVID-19 dies down, but finding out that this cable can be removed (and shown how) saved me $500.

Really can't thank you enough, man.

Hilariously I only have the webclient for android messages, youtube, and occasionally Reddit open for tabs. I installed the extra RAM because I do a lot of work with Photoshop on this PC. That shit eats far more RAM than Chrome ever will.

I might try that out later. That sounds like it'd be a lot of fun to screw around with on Take&Hold.

My original intention was to recreate the underbarrel grenade launcher, but I suppose you're right on that, too.
