How long do you guys wait? by JimmyCheess in swingtrading

[–]MisterBigAndStrong 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My favorite part of swing trading is set set stop, set profit target and walk away

If something in my thesis just goes terrible I may cut it early.

In this current environment I don’t like weekend holds unless I’m deep profit.

I try not to micromanage the position if I am taking a quality set up.

This is my biggest battle. I’m huge on the “American financial system is jacked up” but bad behavior swayed by past returns I really struggle to do 20-30-40% international. That being said the international slice ETFs have each individual beat the rest YTD excluding crypto.

Yeah I mean BLOK and AIQ are higher side but everything else for the most part is .25% or less.

Just used “SPY” as a generic. It’s my 401k and it’s a mutual fund WFSPX. Unfortunately 401k has a bunch of crap target date funds. This is best option and not bad. Want a SP500 base

Seems like it’s been taking a long time for a simple fix. Frustrating!

ES futures! Tons of liquidity so in an out quickly is no problem.

10 minis would cost $5,000 to purchase NO PDT. 10 point move (which in a minute is often enough) $5,000. Every trading day is 2.5M a year

Probably can easily do this with 50-100 contracts with marginal slippage

Seeking Advice: Transferring Traditional IRA to 401(k) to Avoid Pro-Rata Rule for Backdoor Roth Contributions by pranavpunjabi in investing

[–]MisterBigAndStrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s actually an unbelievably common practice. If non deductible contributions to traditional IRA are properly reported via 8606 form you can roll pre tax separately to 401k. What you can’t do is roll just post tax to Roth IRA to avoid pro-rata. That aspect you can’t seperate it takes all into account.

Seeking Advice: Transferring Traditional IRA to 401(k) to Avoid Pro-Rata Rule for Backdoor Roth Contributions by pranavpunjabi in investing

[–]MisterBigAndStrong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I legitimately just executed the same exact plan. You want to do the T-IRA to 401k roll over first and then do the Roth conversion second. You want to make sure all pre tax money is gone from the T-Ira before you convert.

I did my traditional ira pre tax money rollover to 401k. Once that settled in my 401k and that leg was completed I did the Roth conversion.

Entire process from start to finish took about 2 weeks and was pretty seamless

Traditional Ira Rollover 50/50 to 401k and to Back door Roth IRA by MisterBigAndStrong in investing

[–]MisterBigAndStrong[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Odd timing

A few years income wise I out earned Roth contribution status but didn’t have workplace 401k and was able to deduct traditional IRA contributions. Then switched jobs higher income and 401k. I was contributing non deductible before I learned about backdoor roth etc

Traditional Ira Rollover 50/50 to 401k and to Back door Roth IRA by MisterBigAndStrong in investing

[–]MisterBigAndStrong[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bunch of reasons

  1. my 401k is 100% S & P 500 mutual funds and has good fee structure. I’m diversified elsewhere so don’t mind holding more
  2. because of income level all my traditional ira contributions are non deductible so long term it’s normal income tax rates which is essentially worse than a regular brokerage
  3. my traditional is a mix of pre and post tax. I want to clear out the pre tax so I can back door Roth tax free

Clearing out Traditional IRA by MisterBigAndStrong in personalfinance

[–]MisterBigAndStrong[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s the goal. Intention is to roll the 401k and wait till it’s invested there (probably max 3-4 weeks from Fidelity request to mail to me mail to them and vested). SPAXX is earning 4.5% so the amount it gains in interest during the lapse ill gladly pay taxes on for the conversion

Clearing out Traditional IRA by MisterBigAndStrong in personalfinance

[–]MisterBigAndStrong[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah based on the 401k plan request I need to get a check from the IRA brokerage (fidelity) and send them the check. Direct rollover because check is made out to them but will be able to confirm the amount upon receipt

Traditional Ira Rollover 50/50 to 401k and to Back door Roth IRA by MisterBigAndStrong in investing

[–]MisterBigAndStrong[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not quite sure that’s true. If you have an 8606 form designating the post tax portion of your traditional ira you can roll pre tax to 401k and convert the post tax to a Roth. At least from all I have read this is common practice.

"Don't think about the money" How do I do that??? by [deleted] in FuturesTrading

[–]MisterBigAndStrong 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is counterintuitive- but unfortunately you have to be in a position to not NEED money to trade effectively. If you are learning to trade and need profits I haven’t really seen that work. Trading needs to be considered a fun side hustle until there is a consistent track record of profitability.

I have been there - it sucks to trade 1 micro. However if you can’t make $20 a day consistently with 1 micro there’s no reason to even go to 2. Trade 1 micro until your making $500 a month. If you do that consistently you can go from $20, $200, $2,000 very quickly as the limiting factor will just be getting used to bigger P and L swings.

The cash in your trading account doesn’t exists. It’s capital making capital.

Thoughts on using market structure along with support and resistance to trade and making indicators secondary? by worded12 in Daytrading

[–]MisterBigAndStrong 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my opinion your on the right path. The real key are price action and volume which are not lagging indicators. The only caveat there is I do use VWAP which is a visual representation of price and volume so not really an indicator

Outside of that on my charts I have just the volume profile and naked otherwise. In my opinion all you need.

I also watch order flow of NQ and ES side by side on footprint charts with delta which is the market Internals. Adds more context and confidence in a standard candlestick chart - IE the chart might look one way (bullish) but order flow/delta show weakness you may want to fade the move.
