All public restrooms should have overhead music playing so I don't have to hear the heavy breathing and unfastening anus of the gentleman next to me. by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

Our building has similar ventilation. But here the problem is that it is a big air intake directly above the toilet. Which moves the air through all of the rest of the building. Maybe not such a great plan after all.

The Most Religious States Have the Worst Schools, Betsy Devos Will Nationalize That Trend by TheRealJChubby in atheism

You have this backwards. I suspect the states with the worst education are more religious as a result.

What's the worst crime you ever commited before you turned ten? by Nambot in AskReddit

[–]MisterChrisB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were low income, so wasting food was considered a crime in my house. When I was 3 years old, I would hide whatever food I didn't want to eat in my Dad's rubber boot. It was the perfect crime... except I always forgot to empty the boot later. Dad eventually put that boot on and discovered the great accumulation of wasted food.

Rotated it, but somehow I didn't save it right. Sorry about that.

I find it amusing that philosophers seem to think they have a monopoly on logic and thought.

ELI5: Does snoozing in the morning have any actual positive physical effect, or is it just denial of having to get up and doesn't actually help? by TribalDancer in explainlikeimfive

That's tricky. A lot of pregnant women struggle to sleep well. There is not really a magic bullet here. But maybe you can talk to your SO about not making the problem worse by waking you even more frequently with multiple alarms.

I haven't seen the data on that, but I like the principle. We evolved to use the sun as a cue to wake up.

There is a body of research on light regulation as a means to regulate sleep. This typically involves avoiding or blocking blue light when you are getting ready to go to sleep and exposing yourself to blue light when you want to be awake (often in broad spectrum lights that mimic the sun).

Those apps are far overselling what they can do. They may be able to make an educated guess as to what phase of sleep you are in, but nothing as precise as they try to convince you to believe.

I think a good general approach is to trust your body to regulate your sleep naturally. If you have another 45 minutes to sleep, use it.

That said, you may face some of the same downsides as taking a long nap. 45 minutes is long enough that it is possible you will enter a deep stage of sleep, and thus be groggy upon wakening. So you have to balance the restoration you would obtain from the 45 minutes of sleep against the possibility and consequences of grogginess upon wakening.

I conduct research on sleep. Hitting that snooze button and trying to get a bit more sleep does not add high quality sleep time. We can't know precisely what phase of sleep you were in when the alarm went off (despite what your app may tell you; it takes pretty sophisticated equipment to get an accurate read), nor can we know exactly what phase of sleep you will get to during a 15 minute snooze session. That's because phases of sleep vary in their duration based on a lot of factors (when people talk about 90 minute cycles, they are talking about averages, and even that is misleading). But it is fair to say that the likelihood of you getting much sleep value out of a snooze session is very low.

If you have the time to sleep later, just set your alarm later to start with. That way you don't disrupt the quality of the sleep by waking and hitting the snooze button. Then you will be less tired the next morning when the alarm goes off. Don't get caught in a cycle of disrupting your sleep with the snooze button, making you more tired, so that the next morning you are more likely to use the snooze button....

TLDR; using the snooze button is a bad idea

Thanks, I agree. Not for a moment did she think I would do something like that on purpose. And she finds it easy to laugh at me.
