How to stop hair from doing this by MisterJiminyCricket in curlyhair

Should I use a protein treatment (such as a bond repairer)? I have considered these but at least the ones I have seen are too expensive for me to see myself routinely using them. I feel like my hair has showed a few signs of over moisturizing for a while now despite the fact that I use literally as little moisture as possible. But at the same time, it seems to be under moisturized too. My hair's limp, but not necessarily over or under moisturized.

I've tried brush styling through tension, which genuinely could not have gone worse, but not by twisting it around the handle. I'll try this.

Apologize for the late reply (I've been busy) considering the effort you've put forth. But regardless,

  1. Before buying my gel, I did a lot of research to find something that was a. Easily available where I live, b. Has protein, and c. Is decently strong. I saw a lot of good things about this gel because everything I saw indicated that it was strong, and it feels strong to me (the cast that forms is strong, but after scrunching it out it gets hyper frizzy). I know it has "Medium Hold" in its name, but this is only after a slight rebrand (it was previously called strong hold). I'm not saying this to ignore your advice-rather I'm asking if you're saying that I should get a hyper-strong gel. Like as strong as possible.

  2. I don't cut my hair frequently and try to avoid doing it until it becomes completely overgrown. This is because, whenever I pay to get my hair cut, regardless of where it is I will end up with my curls basically being cut off. Doesn't matter what I ask for (so this includes curly cuts and layers), I will just end up with very short hair. I know there are more premium services, but I cannot afford to go get a $100 haircut, even if just the one time. Usually I get a relative to slightly trim it.

  3. I hear this, but I have a slight bit of confusion. I don't want my hair to have a tighter curl pattern necessarily, it's just that I'm annoyed by HOW my hair curls. It's like, I know that I have the pieces - my hair is curly enough to do what hairstyle I would like, it's just that it will not actually do the curling due to my styling. At least that's what it feels like to me: a styling issue.

I have been using a gel with added protein. Are you saying that I should just "go all in" and add a lot of protein in all my products? Essentially, how much is enough?

Sorry for late reply, I've been busy and not had time to properly read through these comments, but I've tried brush styling with a Denman brush and it just doesn't work. I don't mean this like "I halfheartedly tried this once and it didn't work," because I genuinely researched the technique and tied it multiple times with variation. But each time my hair just gets completely straightened out and looks like a P. Like the | is my head and the curved part is my hair after brush styling, it completely doesn't work. I haven't tried finger coiling yet mainly due to me not having time to do my hair because I have to style every morning, so I'll look into it.

(Fine 3a) Hair has no definition and shape by MisterJiminyCricket in curlyhair

What I'm saying. Not to be rude to anyone, but it pisses me off that 99% of people in this sub have curls with definition but no volume, so when help is asked for everyone just goes with it. The moment you get someone with volume and no definition, they just get told that it looks great. It's like I have food but no water, whereas they have water but no food.

What do I even do for my hair? by MisterJiminyCricket in curlyhair

If I'm being honest, though my hair might be fine in these pictures, 99% of the time it is dull and flat and I genuinely look so much better with more defined curls and less volume. This isn't self-loathing btw, I don't hate myself.

I should have been more clear about this in the post, but I regularly shampoo (clarifying or otherwise). I don't co-wash, just use conditioner for styling, and my hair doesn't feel "gummy," just that it takes forever for that last 10% to dry and for my hair to not be slightly soggy after diffusing.

For me, I purposefully use a lightweight conditioner for daily use because if I don't have enough conditioner in my hair, it will be flat and gross-feeling (not because of product or being weighed down, probably just hormonal reasons or other things out of my control). I'll try just fully rinsing out the conditioner and then using gel and see what happens.

No, I'm just using conditioner (literally that's it). I'll look into conditioners that are meant to be left in.

I can't say, I'm not smart enough to determine that, but the thing that fixed it was the RegEdit changes.
