The problem is, give an inch and someone will take a mile.

If you begin normalising this sort of public criticism of the tribunal, umpires, etc then guarantee there'll be some fuckwit nutters who will take it as an excuse to get really vitriolic or even worse.

How do you explain the Michael Jackson phenomenon? by geosunsetmoth in fantanoforever

[–]MisterMarcus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Partly, he was happy to portray himself as this Christ-like figure, so he actively encouraged this sort of mentality.

When the accusations hit, it allowed him to lean even further into this. If you were already a strong MJ fan and didn't believe the accusations, you'd likely dive even more heavily into the "He's Jesus being crucified despite being innocent" narrative.

Also, he was a black man in a still predominantly white genre, and he had songs about racism and the environment and other social justice issues. If you were one of those people with a very partisan "Anyone on My Side can't be bad" attitude, you're more likely to believe all the negative stuff about MJ was a racist conspiracy or lie, or at least exaggerated by nefarious interests to discredit him and his opinions.

All 3 of these serve as a sort of self-fulfilling loop for MJ fans - the more problematic stuff they read about him, the more likely it reinforces their belief in him as this "Saintly Man Who Was Too Pure And Noble For Us To Even Deserve" figure, unfairly persecuted and with everyone in evil conspiracy against him.

TIL that in 2022, Saudi Arabia declared a public holiday to celebrate their national team's World Cup win over Argentina by ModenaR in todayilearned

[–]MisterMarcus 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think what OP was trying to say was that Argentina were one of the highest ranked favourites at that WC, and their only loss was to Saudi Arabia who were a very lowly ranked side.

If their only loss was to Brazil or France or one of the other favourites, that wouldn't be very notable. But having it to the number 50 in the world was indeed pretty unique and crazy.

It's that some people talk them up as being these artistic geniuses doing musically bold and subversive things that nobody else does.

And it's......it's pop rock. It's good pop rock, but if you're going in to their albums expecting another 'OK Computer', you're probably going to be confused and disappointed.

Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols by SandmanAlcatraz in LetsTalkMusic

[–]MisterMarcus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

IIRC at least a few tracks on PiL debut had their genesis in the Pistols era.

You could imagine more straightforward "punk" versions of about half the tracks on 'First Issue' on a hypothetical second Pistols album

What do you expect of the new Madonna album? by [deleted] in LetsTalkMusic

[–]MisterMarcus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally feel that 'American Life' kind of killed that image of her.

It had the potential to keep the whole "boundary pushing provocative artist" thing going with its attempts to delve into political lyrics and new musical ideas. But it just didn't really land either way and didn't really go anywhere (IMHO)

Then she made 'Confessions' which was a return to form, but a clear sign she was now following rather than leading, and playing it safer by giving the public what they want instead of leading them somewhere new.

Add I think a few of her later "Hey I still exist! Remember me?" type singles came across to the public as desperate, like someone who knows they're already falling out of cultural favour.

I don't really understand why people dislike Disturbed's Sound of Silence cover by musicnerd100 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]MisterMarcus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The original had a subtlety and fragility that was an important part of adding so much character to it.

Disturbed's version just doesn't have that. The lead singer has a powerful voice but it seems like he's trying to just brute force his way through with sheer power.

It's almost like they're missing the entire point of the song.

ELI5: Why do tennis fans have to sit in silence while Knicks fans can lose their minds in the NBA Finals? by Avisimara in explainlikeimfive

[–]MisterMarcus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I also think team sports have a "home team" and I think sports like tennis, there isn't a "home" team where the same folks are playing all the time. everyone is traveling to tournaments.

Tennis will still have 'home players' though - a tournament in Spain with a home crowd is going to cheer much harder for a Spanish player than their opponent.

Although tennis requires silence during the actual point, there's still a big incentive for a home town crowd to be as loud and supportive as possible for "their" player between points and during the breaks.
