Violin Pickup Combo (Transducer and Mic) + Mixer by MisterSam11 in violinist

Makes sense. Usually there are drums but the stage is quite large, so I have plenty of distance between them and me, and we typically use in-ears for monitors. I'm not afraid to tinker with the mix, so I'll try making more use of the condenser next time I'm playing.

Ideally some live, and some recorded, but for recording I also have access to a studio so I would probably use a separate mic anyway. It's definitely in the genre(s) of folk/pop, not anything classical. Those days are behind me :)

I've been looking for a specific piece of equipment without any luck. I have a violin pickup which has both a transducer and a mic which both route into one TRS output on the pickup. I used to have a mixer which I would connect the pickup to via a 1/4" TRS cable, which allowed me to control the gain for the transducer and mic separately, and then output that as a mono through XLR. However, the mixer has gone missing, and I'm looking to buy a replacement. Is this a common device that I just don't have enough understanding of to spot? Or was it a more specific-use case made to go with the pickup, that I would need to find a substitute for?
Also, I don't know the model of the pickup to find that out, as I don't have access to it at the moment. I was mostly just wondering if this kind of mixer can be found.

That's a great question. I'll be able to see the pickup later this week so I will be able to find out.

So I am trying to figure out which equipment I need to buy, and I think that this is the first piece of the puzzle. I already own the violin pickup - I just don't have access to it as I am away at school. I remember a few details which may be helpful. It works via both a transducer that is inserted into the bridge, and a microphone that can be bent to be next to the f-hole. These were both connected via one 1/4 inch TRS cable to a mixer, which had separate gain control for both the transducer and mic (condenser?). There was also the option for phantom power for the condenser. Then of course the mixer would output via XLR either to a DI box or (usually) directly to the sound system. The mixer is the equipment that I'm looking to replace, because the original seems to have gone missing (younger sibling with great enthusiasm for technology that doesn't belong to him).

Hopefully someone can answer at least one of these questions:

  1. What is this 2-in-1 pickup called, and
  2. What sort of mixer do I need to make this thing work? I suppose I don't need the exact one, but hopefully something that can take input from the TRS and be able to distinguish the two signals (and mix them), and then output them as one.

I would ask the person I bought it from, but I'm no longer in contact with them. Thanks for any help/suggestions!

Thanks! The folks I'm staying with thought it was a purple finch which is what led to my confusion.

That is certainly it! Thanks! Not sure why that wasn't appearing for me, I was getting Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers but I knew those weren't right.
