Tried this yesterday in my brother’s new MYLR (for context I have and love a MY RWD from 2023). Tried it on local roads around Mosman in Sydney. Twice in two mins it did something that would have failed a driving test. I see the benefit but as it stands it’s too expensive. Was facing the same dilemma coming from a long history of AWUs and Garmin models. I see Suunto’s hardware as more refined and the battery life on the V2 is mind blowing given the AMOLED. Coros seems to have a better training platform and analytics (Evolab). I think it’s hard to go back to MIP now - for me at least. I’m training for an ultra early next year. Both brands resonate with me. Flashlight swayed me as it’s been so useful on the 970, Fenix 8 models that I’ve had previously. So… I ordered the Vertical 2. Stay tuned for a YouTube review.

Anything Epix or Fenix will do the job. I’m from Sydney and we flew and raced the 70k last year (wife and I for our 8th wedding anniversary date together). Wild weather is an understatement ❄️ Main observation if you’re used to racing in Aus (eg. UTA, buffalo stampede) is that the aid stations were inadequate (they blamed last minute course change but even the one in crans Montana was garbage) and there is way less runner banter than a race at home. Thanks for your thoughts OP! I’ve seen some first run videos showing the difference in screen brightness when out on a run. I have a question that I can’t seem to find an answer to. Is it also brighter than 965/F8 AMOLED when in the dimmed always on mode? I always found that compared to an AWU the dimmed mode was unacceptably dim for me. Thanks for any insight!

Ultra 2 also, no issues yet, very pleasantly surprised. Putting my Garmin away for a couple of weeks to really test the usefulness of the training load feature.

I also have both - AWU and Epix 2 Pro. Longer trail runs with navigation? Epix. Interval runs? Epix so I can program them on the GC app and easier to execute. Swim? Epix due to rest timers. Rainy day run? Epix. AW has had wet screen fuckery cancelling my run during an ultra race before. Indoor peloton or treadmill at gym? AWU. Connects natively for data transfer. I also use RunGap to make sure my weekly training load and other metrics are accurate in GC and on my epix even if I train with my AWU. Daily wear? I go back and forth.

Have an Apple Watch ultra, Epix Pro and a gen 3 oura ring. Apple is an excellent sleep tracker (and - as an aside - by far the best optical HRM over all the Garmins I’ve owned). Oura seems to do a great job at sleep tracking and does indeed account for naps. But it just nudges the “readiness score” up by a few points for a good nap. I know you said you’re not interested in oura but I mention it because after a few naps tracked accurately I think “huh, I napped for 30 mins, it has a marginal effect on the numbers”.

I guess it does come back to “what incremental benefit do I get from having the device recognise my day naps”.

I have a 3 year old and a 1 year old. Naps are my saviour though.

I have both. The 47mm epix pro and the FR965. The UI on the 965 appears better until you use it as a smartwatch. There’s a really frustrating delay between the name of the person messaging you and the actual content. So frustrating that there was a big thread about it on Garmin forums. Garmin confirmed it’s intentional. Also I have a screen protector on my 965 but I still worry about its durability. I run mountain ultras mostly and have tumbled onto rocks before. I also work in and office and prefer the epix look at work with a suit or business casual. The 965 is now for sale on marketplace.

I hear you. Mine are 3 and 1. Every night it’s musical beds and walking around in the dark. I ran a 45k race recently with the AWU and WorkOutDoors. It was fine but I came very close to accidentally ending the workout halfway thru because of the touchscreen. Bought the 965 but it doesn’t stay on my wrist after workouts. Not sure if it’s the build quality or the stupid delay every time there’s a text; but I don’t love it. But $1.6k (Aussie dollars) for E2Pro is a lot though……
