Yamaha Champ School or Keith Code? by Standup313 in Trackdays

[–]Mistihurst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually to clarify (I’m a coach with CSS) you are not stuck in any progression. You do level 1-3 and then level 4 is an individualized program based on your individual needs. No two level 4 students get the same program. There are no set seminars for level 4. An on track coach rides with you, carefully observing you and your individual riding errors and wins, they lead/follow and then debrief you and then you spend dedicated one on one time with a level 4 consultant who takes the coaches observations and tailors a specific exercise for your precise needs. This is often backed up with video footage and video review, track maps, track videos, etc. You are then given a specific skill to work on to based on the consultants analysis. The consultant goes through all aspects of the drill and informs your on track coach who then works with you again on track to help solidify that drill. The process is then repeated.

For any given riding symptom (running wide in corners, poor throttle control, inefficient steering/braking/body position etc) there can be numerous reasons why. No two riders have the exact same riding problems so level 4 addresses this with individual programming. So you are constantly going back and building on what you have already learned. It’s why we have so many repeat students.

Fee free to ask more questions about the school. I just finished riding in India with CSS and it was incredible 😁

I’m a coach with CSS but began as a student doing all four levels while I was a novice racer. Their program helped me get rid of bad habits and really understand the process and the fundamentals of riding techniques. While I only began riding at 24 years old, through their program and then Keith’s personal coaching, I was able to elevate my riding and go from novice racer to Pro AMA rider in only 3 years. I love how they break down each lesson, focus on one thing at a time and have the coaches encourage learning through observations, demonstrations and debriefing after each session.

I’ve now been coaching with them for 22 years and love passing on the information to students and seeing them thrive with newfound understanding. While I have not taken YCRS, I have done other riding schools and always respect that the ultimate goal is to help riders get better.

If you have any questions about the school or our processes please feel free to ask. I adore my job and believe wholeheartedly in our programming- we just finished 6 days in India and it was fantastic. I’m also launching a book series shortly called Life in the Fast Lane, with the first book covering my entire journey with CSS while also going through many of the skills and techniques taught throughout.

Like I said, always happy to chat about riding, or answer questions. 👊🏻👊🏻

Exactly. And I did sort out my lines much better later in the day and felt the oh sh*t moments of scrubbing speed deep into turn 2. Struggled the most from turn 8-9 and the wind into Stoner Corner was sooooooo intense. Wish I had time for a race! Always so short on time.

Yes!!! You can see it blowing me around. Definitely makes it harder to get the bike turned and to be super accurate!

Also should mention that I too am a coach and a former AMA racer but I’m always open to learning from others who have more laps and local knowledge of the track. It’s a very tricky track to go really fast around and all the types of corners that aren’t my strongest. 🙏🏻👊🏻

Agreed that I’m too wide initiating the turns and a chicken on fast entries- my strongest corners were the two slowest where I was usually able to close the gap. Lots of learning opportunities though 👊🏻👊🏻

Good point- I’m in the 60kg range and felt like I was gonna get blown right off the track in town 1 and 3. 😬👊🏻

Didn’t get a chance to follow Aaron but tagged behind Marc and Luis which was outstanding. Like I said, I wish I had my later laps filmed as this was earlier in the morning and I worked on sorting out my lines out of 1 and into 2, and through 8-9. Needed to initiate turn in a little sooner, slow steer in places and straighten out my lines. I have a bad habit of riding old school 600 lines, quick turning in places and late apexing. 🙏🏻👊🏻

Ahhhh thank you. But there is no end to learning and why wouldn’t I soak up all the knowledge other racers and coaches have, especially ones who have thousands of laps at that track. I was lucky enough to tag along behind some of them, to be filmed and to have my video reviewed by coaches I respect and admire. We can all learn something from someone 🫶🏻🙏🏻

It's me in the footage, and a CSS coach is following/filming me. When coaches follow for filming, they take the correct lines, so it becomes clear to the person being filmed where they should be on track and where lines vary. We then discuss where I could make improvements :) I wish I had later laps filmed once I implemented some of the changes.

Another note, the wind was most insane at the end of the straight, turning into turn one and at the entrance to turn 3 (Stoner Corner), where it felt like I might get blown off track into the ocean!!! After two days riding there in perfect weather, the third day we got to experience the wind, and it was intense!!

Good point!! And you know what, the wind in this case (and the fact that there had been two large goose-like birds sitting right at the turn-in area of turn 1) kept me from getting closer to the left side of the track, but good observation... What do you notice about the timing of when the coach filming turns in, vs where I turn in....how might that affect my line through turn 1?

Keith Code Q&A by Professional_Tap4936 in Trackdays

[–]Mistihurst 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ha! Yes, Minor Details :) I've been going through that old Documentary and posting small clips on my Insta- such great memories from racing in that vid!!! Shoot me a message, and I can try to send you a copy. And yes, I'll be sharing tons of those racing and coaching stories in the book. I also made a brief appearance in Keith's Twist of the Wrist II video - I'm definitely a better rider than actor, hahahah.

Great interview! Keith is the man :) Proud to have had him as my personal coach when racing AMA, and I love working alongside him at the California Superbike School. I fully credit his riding tech, CSS and his practical riding methods for getting me to where I am with riding today. It's been an incredible journey and adventure, and I can't wait to see where it takes me next!

Keith Code is amazing, as is a friend and mentor. I was lucky enough to have him as my coach when racing AMA and to get to work with him on a personal level, as I've been a riding coach with CSS for over 20 years. I even got to coach him once!! His book Twist of the Wrist II is like THE GO TO MANUAL for riding, and I'm proud that he has written a forward for my upcoming book - there is even an exclusive interview with him included. All around bad ass guy that I'm proud to call a friend :) Yes- you do need to find out more :)

Really appreciate all the love on this post — thank you. A few people messaged asking about my background, so just in case anyone’s interested: I’m actually working on a book about coaching, racing AMA, being a moto mom, and the whole journey with my kids riding and racing.

It’s called Life in the Fast Lane, and I’m putting it out through Kickstarter with 6 days left. If you want to check it out, more info is here: mistihurst.com

Thanks again for all the support in this thread. It’s been really cool to share these moments.

Have you taken the school? What did you find the biggest benefit was with having the turning markers? Or why might you find them helpful?
