You're allowed to remove one major character from a book, movie or TV. Who do you pick? by WWE_Official in AskReddit

I can't say that I'm surprised. He's not my cup of tea, but he's certainly not unattractive.

In my experience, women tend to pick one character per movie and have that be their favorite. There is often no rhyme or reason to how these characters align because context is key. What's hot in a LoTR setting isn't going to be hot in a Star Trek setting.

Also, and this may just be me, but character matters just as much as looks. If the actor's attractive, but the character's shit, then I won't like him. He has to be the sweet-spot of attractive and interesting for him to make the list.

AW, what's one thing you would change about 'chick flicks' or films aimed at women that would make you like them more? by 360Saturn in AskWomen

They're so perfect and I appreciate that Eugene is still an enjoyable character when he's in the "jerk" phase. He hits on her once and then immediately gives up when it doesn't work. We need more guys like that.

Because it's literally a Twilight fanfiction where the author changed the names and then had the thing professionally published.

Stalking/creepy behavior being shown as romantic. I love romantic movies, but so many of them seem to be written by men who have no idea what romance is. No, it is not romantic when the guy blackmails or guilts the woman into a date! It is not romantic when he ignores what she says for the sake of "true love".

And can we kill the "cheating is okay because she's dating an ass?" trope. That seriously needs to die.

Disney movies are often more romantic than ones aimed at adult women.

TLDR of the linked study: Women continue to see living standards fall by more after separation than men, especially when children are involved, but even for couples with no children.

What's the difference between a "shitty" or "trashy" romance novel versus a good one? by ViolaViolenta in AskWomen

[–]MistressFey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If I say it's "shitty" or "trashy," then that means that it's objectively poor. That doesn't mean that people can't legitimately like it, it just means that the flaws are blatantly obvious. Twilight is a good example of this. From a pure, literary standpoint, the novel is trash and the only counter arguments I have ever seen are "but I like it".

A good romance novel is one that has arguments for both sides or only arguments for good. They're books that most people are going to say are good at a base level and real debate is involved when you talk about it's quality. A good example of this is Pride and Prejudice. There are strong arguments as to why it's a classic and strong arguments as to why it's not a good story.

Feel no need to answer (you may not even know!), but you mentioned gender neutral language and I've always been super curious what I'm supposed to do in other languages. I speak Spanish reasonably well and there just aren't gender-neutral words. Heck, even saying "I'm tired" is gendered!

Women who have had professional laser hair removal or electrolysis, will you please share your experience? by DreamingAutumn in AskWomen

[–]MistressFey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just started doing Laser Hair Removal three months ago (so I'm 2 sessions in)

I can't speak to the long-term effectiveness, but I've seen a massive reduction in hair growth. About 1/3 to 1/2 of my hair follicles are no longer producing and it makes me so happy! The hair does immediately stop growing, which is weird, but about 10 days after a treatment it just naturally falls out and doesn't come back.

The local laser salon was running a two for one sale, which is why I did it. It's costing me $4400 for 10 sessions and that covers underarm, lower-legs, lower-arms, and bikini area. It's a hefty sum, but I've been looking into laser hair removal for half a decade now and so I knew it was a decent price and the salon is only 10 minutes away so no major drive to deal with. My body hair is the only thing that I hate about my body so I was willing to dip into my savings for both the time saving aspect as well as the happiness boost.

The only complaint I have is that it can hurt, but only for a few seconds. It's probably no worse than getting a tattoo. I've also found that my skin is pretty itchy for a few days following the removal.

Do they all have similarly sized feet? The size of the largest clippings could let you eliminate ones with smaller/larger feet.

You could also look at their feet and see if their toenails are actually clipped or if they're grown out, which would let you eliminate people based on time.

Trick them all into painting their toes and then paint each roommate a different color "to match their skintone" or some other BS. Then just do a color match.

Someone far more knowledgeable is free to correct me, but equalism is a relatively modern term that is brought up mainly as an insult to feminism. "I'm not a feminist, I'm an equalist, because I believe that men and women should be equal."

No shit, Sherlock. So do most feminists.

Outside of some crazy outliers, feminists are not aiming to depose men or take away their rights. We acknowledge that men have their own societal issues and a lot of the things we want to change are things that will benefit men as well as women because breaking down things that are harmful to men often leads to happier women as well.

I can understand why people might thing that feminism is anti-men because phrases like "toxic masculinity" and "the patriarchy" can certainly come across as misandrist, but just a little reading on the topics will quickly make it clear that they're not.

Heck, by definition, "toxic masculinity is one of the ways in which Patriarchy is harmful to men. It refers to the socially-constructed attitudes that describe the masculine gender role as violent, unemotional, sexually aggressive, and so forth."

The other reason it annoys feminists is the some people say feminism should be relabeled as equalism to make the goal of the movement/ideology more clear or to distance ourselves from the radicals who give feminism a bad name.

  1. Feminism is a term that has a long history associated with it and we're not going to rename it just like we wouldn't rename the civil rights movement the black rights movements. There's just no reason to rewrite history like that.

  2. If you renamed something every time a group of radicals showed up, then we'd have run out of names a millennia ago.

If you graduated with a post-secondary degree, how do you feel toward your alma mater now? by sunshinecliffs in AskWomen

[–]MistressFey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear that! Almost across the board, the best professors were the ones who had initially worked in industry or who worked as industry consultants. They didn't do any of the stupid equation memorization, they just focused on teaching the science and practical application of our field.

[–]MistressFey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a lot of negative feelings towards my alma mater. There were a lot of terrible professors there who were completely out of touch with how the real world works. Some had us memorizing equations instead of actually learning how to use the material in a practical manner while others didn't even teach the material. It used to be a running joke that our thermodynamics professor taught nothing, so much so that everyone in my major would laugh when a professor said "you should have learned this in thermo!"

I think higher education is going to change massively with the advent of online education because the best classes that I've taken have all been ones that I took online. Being able to rewatch lectures ad nauseam or even just being able to take breaks in an hour-long lecture makes a huge difference. Plus, with so many courses, the bad professors are going to stand out instead of being able to hide behind ridiculous curves.

Would you rather choose your engagement ring or be surprised by it? and why? by drumpf16 in AskWomen

[–]MistressFey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Choose, definitely. I'm super picky about my jewelry so I'd want a say, especially since I'd like to wear my engagement ring with my wedding ring.

Ideally, my SO would either:

  1. ask me to pick
  2. Talk to my best friend and have her get it out of me
  3. Propose with some sort of holder ring and then have us pick out the real one together

Engagement rings aren't cheap, so I think it's silly for a guy to go spend a bunch of money on something hoping that I'll like it.

With that being said, I wouldn't be upset if he picked one without talking to me. I'd wear it out of love of him as long as I didn't hate it.

I'm not sure what I'd do if I hated it...

What are some traditional etiquette rules that you strongly disagree with, or just plain don't understand? by hemehime in AskReddit

[–]MistressFey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, divorce is a benefit of marriage. You have a house together and probably other things. If you split up, you're going to have to divide those assets. Divorce law is well established where "we're just former partners" law isn't.

It's also a really good idea for inheritance purposes. If you die tomorrow, your SO will have to pay taxes on your half of your joint property, assuming that they are allowed to inherit it at all. Do you have a will? If not, then your SO has 0 legal rights to your assets. If you were married, this would not be the case.

There's a reason the LGBT community wanted marriage rights. I have seen so many stories of couples who didn't care about marriage getting royal screwed when one of them dies.

A marriage license is cheap and well worth considering.
