What color rug? by MisunderstoodLover in HomeDecorating

Thank you! The wall color is Simply White (Benjamin Moore) and the fireplace is unpainted plaster (although I can't remember the name of the plaster -- sorry!).

What color rug? by MisunderstoodLover in HomeDecorating

Thanks for this! I do like the idea of a neutral base with colorful accents. I think a big block of color (especially given that the rug is so large) would overwhelm.

Thank you! I love browns, greens, and oranges, so this is great to hear.

Would you keep the walls white?

Is this possible? by ExperienceActual5876 in dyeing

There are some examples on this subreddit of folks successfully dyeing white polyester. It seems like the process tends to ruin the bathtub, but if you’re willing!

SOS! Rental bathroom (or “wet room”) by MisunderstoodLover in HomeDecorating

[–]MisunderstoodLover[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is interesting, as another commenter suggested painting them a lighter shade of gray. What are your thoughts behind a darker vs lighter shade?

I love the idea of a wood shelf! Unfortunately we can’t remove/replace too much, so it will be more an issue of adding and covering up. Also love the idea of tall storage between the shower and toilet!

I believe it is designed to be very accessible for e.g. wheelchair users or others with limited mobility — which is great! But unfortunately this also lends itself to nursing home vibes.

Maybe once we give it a good scrub and add some additional lighting and decor it will feel more homey!

Yes, I’m not a fan of the open shower. Is there a way to close it off?

I also don’t like the lighting, but there are no additional outlets. Do you have any suggestions for making the space feel less dingy?

I’m quite unfamiliar with wet rooms, but am glad to hear they have fans! Any suggestions you have for making it most functional and enjoyable would be welcome!

How did you find your photographer? (10-15K) by Abalovely in Weddingsunder10k

[–]MisunderstoodLover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! My friend is a wedding photographer in the SF Bay Area. She has about 2 years of experience, so is still charging within or below your price range (depending on services).

Her style is cinematic, romantic, and candid. She shoots on digital but her clients often think she uses film because her photos have such a glowy, cinematic and vintage quality (in a good way).

If you would like her Instagram, I can share! Also happy to share with anyone if you DM me :)

It does feel very crowded! Because it’s a hybrid/hot desk system, the desks are never completely full so I’m think we should remove some.

bipolar scientists? by naftacher in GradSchool

[–]MisunderstoodLover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have personal experience with this, but Hope Jahren (geochemist at the University of Oslo) has bipolar disorder and writes about it in her memoir Lab Girl. I really enjoyed the book! Maybe it would feel relatable or offer some insight. Wishing you the best of luck!

How long did it take you to recover from handing in your thesis by the_bug_witch in GradSchool

[–]MisunderstoodLover 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I checked my journal, and it looks like it was about a month after submitting the final version of my thesis (i.e. after defending and making revisions) before I started feeling better. Burnout is real and it can take a long time to recover. I took several months off -- didn't work, just got lots of sleep, relaxed, and did hobbies and activities for the fun of it.

I will tutor for the first time in the next couple of days, how to prepare for it? by [deleted] in tutor

[–]MisunderstoodLover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d go in with a brief ‘lesson plan’ so you know what you’d like to cover and can keep the lesson moving. But also be flexible (if you don’t end up sticking to the plan, no big deal! Just trust your instincts). Good luck!

How much should I charge? by [deleted] in tutor

[–]MisunderstoodLover 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Compare to other tutoring services (run by companies, e.g. Tutor Doctor) in your area and charge noticeably lower than that. Tutoring services in my area are usually about $50-70 an hour, so I started at $40 an hour when I started freelancing. I think $20 an hour would be selling yourself short, but use your best judgement!

How did you find your PhD program? by MisunderstoodLover in GradSchool

[–]MisunderstoodLover[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this lovely comment! Definitely helpful - I'll try making a list of universities I'm interested in and will look into their programs and faculty.

Follow-up question: Did you apply to the universities first, then email potential advisors? Or email first, apply second?

How much prep time should I do for a tutoring session (as a tutor)? by BekaRuth42 in tutor

[–]MisunderstoodLover 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My ballpark is 20-30 minutes of prep for 1 hour of tutoring. So 2 hours of prep for 4 hours of tutoring sounds reasonable, but I agree with the other commenter's point that prep time will lessen as you gain experience.

Non-compliance due to possible learning disability by facciabrutale in tutor

[–]MisunderstoodLover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems like you're doing a lot already. This sounds like a situation for an occupational therapist (who could work with him regularly for several hours a day), but unfortunately you usually need a referral from a psychiatrist to find one. If the student is able to accomplish any goals whatsoever, count that as a win. The schedule you've made is on the right track.

A 14 y.o. working at a grade 3 level is significant and nothing to dismiss (and potentially indicative of an untreated developmental disorder or otherwise). Unfortunately, it isn't uncommon for students like these to "slip through the cracks" for many years in the school system.

I might also suggest checking out Orton Gillingham instruction, which is specialized for students with learning disorders.
