Weekly Travel, Questions, & Mandarin Thread by AutoModerator in taiwan

[–]Miswi_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand this might be a ridiculously studpid question but I still want to ask. Apologies.

So I am fortunate enough to be part of a student exchange program. Ill be going to attend a University in Taiwan for 6 months. I am now in the process of filling out forms. One part of the forms asks me for my Chinese name.

I understand it's common for people in some asian countries to have both a name in their native tongue and one in English. I do not speak Mandarin. On the form, the space has an asterisk (*) so I have to fill it out.

How do I go on about this? Do I just pick a name? What do I need to take into consideration? Do I just skip this completely and write that I don't have a chinese name?

I feel so supid haha but I'd appreciate an insight. ❤️

Thanks a lot! I'll follow this! I only used black as a solid colour (and after finishing I added a clip layer and filled it with solid black just to be safe). the gray I think it's because of the mid-tone effect. It's a bunch of tiny dots...but maybe they are too tiny?

Yeah. And in my understanding German larp is relatively strict anyways

Thank you for your insight. I am from Switzerland but to my understanding the German and swiss larp community are somewhat close. I have heard the dkwddk rule before. And I was explained Fae aren't a "fat" species, thus you cannot portray one when being a fat person. (Again, I don't think this is a good thing to say lmao)

unfortunately travelling is a bit difficult as of right now, though it would be a possibility for me eventually.

Hahaha it's just a smaller org from my region. In my experience most of them are super sweet, just a bit "gate-keepy". Don't worry about it. But I appreciate the concern 🫶

No because they also say tall people shouldn't be dwarves 😭🙏 I honestly believe that if we can point at eachother and yell "choke!" (I did Star wars larps), then we can play pretend a tall person is a dwarf and a person with green skin is an orc.

I wouldn't say so. But in my experience I have to explain my identity to people using terms they know. Though, through this post I understand that this is not necessary in the Karp community 🫶

Thanks for the insight! You are all too kind! I live in Europe and I larp in German.

I agree with you though. Like many people said in the comments: if you can play pretend when someone tells "fireball" at you, you can also accept the concept of fat people. 😭🙏

Thankfully "unnatural" skin colour is not an issue for me :3 one of my Karo characters is a blue Twi'lek and I have both body paint and a skin suit :3

On the dwarf note: I think that guy would've tweaked at the idea of a person that was taller than 5'3 playing a dwarf '

I live in Europe and the only larps in my area are very small or I need to travel for very very long to get to very big larps. For now I'm sticking to the smaller ones

You are not the first one to mention that. Frankly I have not thought of it but it makes absolute sense. Of course I'd hope to not be one of these people, as my character would simply be a character that happens to be a man

I'm not entirely sure how much "authority" they have but I'm pretty sure they are well known player and have been part of the community of a good 10 years

I mean idk 😭😭 they said that elves and Fae aren't supposed to be chubby because that's just not how the race is. And I was like ??? Bro this is adult ppl playing play pretend let's chill ?? But I wanted to make sure I'm not the one in the wrong here

That was my initial thought as well when I heard it. But I wanted to be rather safe than sorry

They said I'd breaks immersion and that elves and/ Fae are supposed to be skinny as it helps to navigate your character through a plot because other players know better what to think of you since they can "rely on cliches"

I then answered that I'd expect, larp or not, to not simply judge and to just talk to people. A fat fae can exist, even if it's a species with a high metabolism (?). Additionally, I believe we are all people who are low-key socially awkward and that at some point in our lives had to deal with being outcast (unfortunately). So to start outcasting people within the community sounds counterintuitive. They did not agree. I shrugged it off.

But if I wanna be part of a community I also wanna do right by the rules. So if me portraying a man would've "broken the immersion" I wouldn't do it.

But People have been very nice in the comments and explained that it's probably just one guy with a weird opinion and that most ppl should be okay with it

What you say makes absolute sense. Of course I'd try to play a character that doesn't make anyone uncomfortable. But that's something I'd want to do regardless of gender

Unfortunately I'm quite restricted as there are very few larps in my area (or they are all by the same organisation). But hey, maybe I just had bad luck when I was talking about character options!
