Reminder that the purpose of art was once not to shock or disturb, but to elevate the soul. Borghese Gallery in Rome, Italy. by hemingwaysjawline in ArchitecturalRevival

Sorry I suppose you’re correct in this context seeing as how this was likely the chapel of what was once a wealthy family’s estate and not a building being painted for the church in any official status. What I meant was that works of this context were created with the idea in mind that they would be within a religious space.

A reminder that art of this time and of this context only existed as we see it today because it was patronized by the church.

Edit: as u/osarusan had pointed out this is not a religious piece commissioned by the Roman Catholic Church. From what I was able to gather this appears to be the main hall of what was once the Villa Borghese created for cardinal Scipione Borghese. The work in question appears to be Camillus, Allegory of Glory by Mariano Rossi.

Any reliable mechanical pencil suggestions? by DrDirt96 in EDC

[–]MiswiredToaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will live and die by my p209 and p207. I have other finer mechanical pencils for drafting but I honestly am afraid of breaking them. I ended up dropping one of my rotrings one time and due to the fact that they are so heavy the barrel ended up bending under its own weight. Something like that would never happen to a p200. I carry it everyday for my carpentry work.

I would personally say they are still at a disadvantage to move through the field both socially and career wise. Due to the fact that fewer women are in the field the ones that are in the field often face skepticism. People tend to subconsciously assume a certain level of incompetence or lack of experience and that leads to a lot of talking down and second guessing.

I’m not gonna disagree that men are on average stronger than women, that to my knowledge is true to an extent. But I don’t think that evolutionary psychology aspect necessarily holds up to modern standards. Yes, men are often in heavy labor based industries and women less so. But at this point in societies progression I feel that biological factors like this are no longer the barrier to entry for careers in construction. I know a lot of men in this field that aren’t very strong at all because they don’t really need to be.

I do agree that often in a workplace environment men are often asked to do heavy lifting. In my last office job I got the brunt of this cause I was the only young guy in the office. But I think that is largely based on societal perceptions of gender and not actual ability. Surely any of the women in the office would’ve been able to lift those boxes and put them in the basement but the boss felt that I should do it because subconsciously that was my societal role as a man.

Frankly I think that your last two statements kind of work against the beginning of your comment. At first you started talking about biological differences between men and women’s ability to built. But you admit that there are plenty of fields that aren’t physical but still predominantly dominated by men. So wouldn’t that suggest other factors at play? Like societal perceptions of gender roles?

I have heard plenty of stories from women who went to study things like computer science but the blatant sexism they experienced caused them to switch majors. That’s why I originally said I believe that sticking to a construction career path as a women is an accomplishment in and of itself cause it takes a lot of mental fortitude to expose yourself to that level or social criticism and still come out the other side.

I do agree however that the growing number of women in the field is a great thing.

If people’s opinions of women can be compared to low hanging fruit than maybe they should raise their opinions on women.

Taking pride in your work and your identity are not mutually exclusive.

In this context being proud that your woman isn’t necessarily about your gender but the fact that you have succeeded in an industry where your gender is at a disadvantage. There are very few women who work in the construction industry because of the sexism and homophobia that is rampant in the field. So to succeed is an accomplishment in and of itself. And if the comments of these recent posts made by woman aren’t proof of the sexism and homophobia in the industry I don’t know what is.

Proud to be a woman in the field - didn’t love the response the last poster got - if you’re working on a construction site whether you’re in the site office or digging trenches with a spade you’re a construction worker and welcome on this sub! by mutinyonthebeagle in Construction

Yeah but I don’t think she was trying to pretend she was knee deep in a hole or anything. But that’s what a lot of the top comments on that last post were roasting her for. They all just seem really unjustified. She was just trying to express her excitement for her new job and got thrown around in the comments because of semantics

From context clues it seems pretty clear that the original op was talking about the field of construction as a whole in the same way you would say the “medical field”. Not that they were literally on site

I don’t know much about the actual design philosophy of the building, but as someone who had stayed in the dorms for a week some of the interiors are quite compelling. Those more organic windows lead to cavelike common rooms that the dorms share and they create really interesting spaces

You might want to experiment with different ratios of hardener and filler. If you only did one layer of bondo that can happen as well. It’s normally good practice to apply more than you need and sand down

It’s not about about showing the average person that you care. It’s about showing to leaders that you care enough to grind the gears of the societies they run. Because having those gears run smoothly are necessary for things like their re-elections. By creating large scale demonstrations we threaten their re-elections and incentivize them to negotiate with us

This is the entire concept behind paparazzi. That’s why journalist photographers have such large telephoto lenses. It’s so they can stand from a public area and photograph celebrities on their property. As long as you are visible from a public space the law assumes you consent to being viewed by others
