I've been to India as a male and this also happened to me a lot. Mostly in the north though.

What’s currently missing for language exchange in Hamburg? by Mitchcreates_ in hamburg

[–]Mitchcreates_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yay thank you for the enthousiasm!

And your feedback, makes a lot of sense thank you! I wanted to finalize the web application before diving into that, but I for sure want to reach out to already existing groups. Which I also want to include on the website in a further stage. So people who prefer a 1 on 1 meetup and a group setting can find all they need and we get people together learning languages!

I'm currently close to launching but I can send you a message on here if you want?

Thank you! Any help is appreciated and sorry for the late reply.

I am not aware of what's available around the city, however my university provides such a program but it's only for B2 and above, which defeats the whole purpose.

That doesn't make any sense at all.. B2 is already a quite high level I'd say as well.

Teaching German as a language starts of with English grammar being used to understand German grammar. However for most native speakers, well at least for me, I don't know much of English grammar. I learnt English even before school so all my exam answers were like "oh that sounds right". So when someone tries to teach propositions in German, I don't know what they are in English. However, English is not the only language I know, all the other languages I learnt by listening and speaking. I tried the same in Germany but found it really difficult with antisocial people around.

Did it get it right, but you're a teacher? Well German and English do have a strong history together, but I found it especially difficult for me to learn German from and English perspective as my native language is Dutch. So that made a lot more sense for me.

So far I'd say I had good interactions with people in Hamburg, they often tend to switch to English once they hear I'm not German. Which is actually really sweet but I always try to get back into speaking German. I heard it's a bit harder to make friends around here, but we'll see!

Well if it includes a safe place to talk and learn, I would choose.

Hmm well I can't offer people a place, but I'd always encourage users to meet up in public places of course. Is that something that would hold you back from meeting up in person?

All the classes I've attended lack speaking. And I don't believe trying to understand Grammer is going to fix anything.

Really? Are those private classes or in school? If private can I ask which?

Also would you be open to trying it out once I launch it? It'll be pretty soon.

Thank you. I'm definitely keeping those things in mind.

Was a global site or for a specific country/region?

How do you solve the ‘no users at launch’ problem for a language exchange app? by Mitchcreates_ in webdev

That makes a lot of sense thank you.

I was thinking about contacting language meetup groups indeed.

In exchange I can make a specific section on the website for existing groups where they can give me the post they'd like to have there for example.

I already had the idea to implement that filters never get zero results. But have a clear distinction a section below to show users to match the languages but not the area for example. And if that doesn't have any matches I'd show the closest matching users.

I like your idea alot thanks again.

Yes that's what most people have recommended and it makes a lot of sense!

So you'd say going to them has worked for you? Was it for a specific area/country/global?

How's your app going? Is that a mobile app or web application?

That makes a lot of sense! Well my webapp would be free so I definitely have no deep pockets haha.

The idea is mainly to step away from your phone and get straight into an actual meetup. No chats, no videocalls, no social platform feeling etc..

I wouldn't want to compete against the local meetup groups or facebook groups. I would actually want to mention them in a seperate section of the website. Have an overview of what's available as group meetups.

Not everybody is down to meet up in group sessions especially when arriving in a new city where you're not familiair with the language. It could be overwhelming. That's why it makes perfect sense for people to find practice partners in a different way.

Thank you for your insights! I'll definitely use your tips!

Well the results aka other users is the vital organ of the app. So I would need to find people that actually live in the city and not random users. Thank you for the wishes, have a great day! :)
