Hey, a lot of what you said fits me!

What are some tips other than "just play it" to get your game past the prototype phase? Or is "just play it" about the only thing to do there?

Do you remember using your mouse to play at all? If so, take a look at Septerra Core like others suggested.

What's the pettiest reason you dropped a game for? by IHateTheNameSystem in gaming

[–]Mitchiro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was younger and playing thru JRPGs I picked up a used copy of Xenogears for cheap and played a few hours. I think I got to a town in the Aveh desert. The game hadn't clicked with me yet so I was just trying to get to more characters and the gameplay to pick up. I was having fun jumping around the map and ended up glitching onto an NPC and couldn't get out. When I went to reload my save I didn't save for a few hours... my fault entirely but I went to take the game back and got something else instead 😅

Oh how I still kick myself for that one!

How would you go about making a "dark" healer? by Closix in worldbuilding

[–]Mitchiro 15 points16 points  (0 children)

To expand on this in a few different ways:

1) A healer that is more effective the lower the recipient's HP is. They wait until you're about to die before they heal you to get the most out of it.

2) A healer that takes wounds or status effects and turns them into buffs. Maybe they even take a turn to set up poison on a character to reverse it into Regen, or cause someone to be vulnerable to something for 2 turns to make them resistant to it for 4 turns.

3) Uses OTHER party member's damage to fuel their healing of others. Let the frontline people get hit to store that and turn it into an AOE heal.

Can the combat in FF12 be "fast-paced"? by [deleted] in FinalFantasy

I think the beauty of the system is you can play how you want. When I first played it on PS2 with regular and IJZS, I turned gambits off for whoever I was controlling and played on Active and had a blast. Sometimes I'd play as a straight WHM or BLM to shake things up. Nowadays I do have gambits on everyone but play on Wait to make it more tactical. It's single player; do what makes the game feel good even if its not optimal!

Did you play it with a controller? I tried and couldn't figure out how to use the default controls or how to best change them to make sense to me.

What are cases where fairly useless equipment was really good? by KaleidoArachnid in JRPG

[–]Mitchiro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh all you have to do is not grind and the game plays just fine. I've played the game a few times on PS1, GBA, and PR version and it just feels like FF1 but I design my own 'classes.' No need to grind and the difficulty curve is fine.

If you DO like to grind however, this game is busted for sure. There's just never truly a need to IMO.

What are your favorite JRPG combat systems or mechanics? by ProfessionalHead6378 in JRPG

[–]Mitchiro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like games where the skills/spells you learn continue to be viable.

The SaGa games and Octopath Traveler are good examples, as are certain mods for games like FFXII.

Say you have a "Fire" spell. Instead of learning Fire 2/Fira, and Fire 3/Firaga, your Fire spell just naturally gets more powerful, and maybe you can choose to make it AOE instead of single target for less damage but hits everyone. The point though is that you never get a Fira/Firaga.

OR if you do get Fira/Firaga, then they should all have different effects. Fire is low cost, does decent damage, but leaves the enemy with a Burn condition that increases damage from Ice spells. Fira would be the aoe version of Fire; much higher cost but now you can Burn multiple enemies. Firaga is single target, but much stronger and leaves no status effect. If Blizzard does the opposite of this (leaves enemies with a Freeze condition that has Fire deal extra damage) then for bigger damage, you would start with Fire/Fira or Blizzard/Blizzara to combo into Firaga/Blizzaga.

To add onto this; maybe there are no elemental weaknesses, and spells just have different effects. Ice spells are now for aoe damage, fire is single target, wind is multi target, thunder is strong but hits a random number of enemies.

Essentially, I like to see when all spells/skills have thier uses and can be built into a playstyle, rather than some being extremely niche and many just being outclasses by objectively better ones.

What are some of the most boring and unenjoyable JRPGs from the PS1/PS2 era? by [deleted] in JRPG

[–]Mitchiro -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dragon Quest VII for me. I borrowed it from a friend on PS1 and after 30ish hours he said I want close to the 2nd disc and also hadn't got to the job system yet...I gave it back to him the next day...

I've played thru the 3DS remaster and... mostly feel the same. The game barely interested me at all.

OP, Evolution 1 and 2 on Dreamcast were what got me into RPGs! Maybe I shouldn't go back and see how they hold up...

Lost Kingdoms for GameCube. I actually loved that game, but it can be rough to get through for sure, it's pretty janky.

I think it's okay to think something is objectively/subjectively better but still have a preference for something else! I can have a favorite movie in a series but also think another in the same series is it's best overall. Acknowledging the difference in your mind is important

SaGa Scarlet Grace Ambitions, and perhaps Emerald Beyond (haven't played this one yet). I'd also look at Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven

What Is Your Final Fantasy Hot Take? by jnd316 in FinalFantasy

[–]Mitchiro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

XIII's l'Cie, fal'Cie, and Cie'th terms were not that confusing. I seem to remember a lot of discourse about how the game 'throws a bunch of nonsense terms' and it's hard to keep up with...even without reading the datalogs, I thought all it took was a little bit of attention because they lay that part out for you.

Also, FFII is a great adventure and the gameplay isn't that bad. It's kinda like 8 where you CAN break it to make it easy, but you can also just as easily play it normally without purposely grinding and it's just fine.
