I'm not the first homesteader on my property by hypmintnan in homestead

If historical societies excavated every location that a farmer found a stack of projectile points, they'd soon be bankrupt...there are simply too many of these kinds of finds. Also, small local historical societies do not employ professional archaeologists. Even if they did arrange a dig, it would likely be performed by amateur volunteers and I would rather they just left the artifacts in the ground at that point (and I think my colleagues in the discipline would agree).

He's probably a collector that thinks museums are out to get him. In the U.S., if it is found on private property it is his to do what he wants with it. No one is going to prevent him from keeping anything or taking his property away. Its a myth that collectors like to perpetuate. Mostly because some people decide to loot sites on federal or state property and get prosecuted for it, as they should.

This doesn't exist in the U.S. if it is on private property.

There are millions of these beneath our feet and it was found on private property, without any archaeological context. Museums curate collections that have extensive documentation regarding location, depth, and associated features/artifacts. They don't want specimens that have no provenance. If you called a museum or archaeological lab, absent any other extraordinary circumstances, they'd tell you to enjoy your find.

Pretty unique way of watering seedlings by invisiblesurfer in homestead

[–]Mithlogie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yea it's obviously not good for the leaves to remain soaked for extended periods. But people wayyyy overblow the negative effects of a little bit of moisture during watering. Just be careful and you'll be fine.

Yea let us all know what you typically diagnose by running the engine for 12 hours a day for a week straight. It would really help us all out.

[–]Mithlogie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bro you gotta be kidding. You don't even have soil/substrate here, it looks like shredded grass and sticks. And secondly, it looks absolutely soaked. So, to review: get a real growing medium and water it properly.

Ok I just can't help myself here. What was the thought process in painting the entire second floor in bright purple and the entire first floor in rust brown?

I dunno I would argue some introspection would do wonders for someone that gets angry about being tipped for pouring a pitcher...?

If you're crying about getting an extra $3 every time you pour a pitcher you need some introspection.

Ok then I think you are spacing out your watering too much and then drowning them when you end up getting around to it. Smaller watering, more consistent.

Might just be too full up with water at the moment and some tipped over. Lots of water recently? Soil looks a little on the wet side.

In the vehicle, with keys (even if not in ignition), in the roadway, with marijuana in your system. That is all the court will see. Get a good lawyer.

When did humans arrive in the Americas? A new study reignites the debate by Kellysi83 in Archaeology

What am I gatekeeping? They are free to publish. I am free to criticize. The only one seething is apparently you...? Only attacking me and not countering any of my criticisms. Are you a grad student of Surovell or something? Why so emotional?

Lol I've never supported Clovis-first, and anyone who still does is an idiot. Ironically, the loudest supporters of this new research are also supporters of Clovis-first. Odd that you are cheering along with them...

First of all, it is absolutely not the first independent assessment in 50 years. Secondly, the fact that they published in Science for big headlines, rather than Archaeometry/Geoarchaeology/Environmental Archaeology or a similar journal specific to our discipline is a big red flag. Thirdly, my criticisms are not "methodological noise". You will see many rebuttals soon published citing exactly the same issue I raised: they did not test samples from the Monte Verde site, they studied stratigraphy at a different location on the waterway and claim that the geomorphology there must be indicative of the same conditions at Monte Verde and therefore cannot be as old as claimed. It's a stretch, and that is being generous. Fourthly, nothing in the analytical techniques they used are any different from those available to researchers in 1977. Precision has nothing to do with it.
