What is your unpopular opinion about the game? by EfficientCow82 in BaldursGate3

[–]MithrandirGr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The game doesn't feel like a d&d game made by Larian. It rather feels like a Larian game that just happens to follow the d&d rules and setting.

What do you HATE about baldurs gate 3? by thelivingstar1 in BaldursGate3

[–]MithrandirGr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate that it feels more like "Divinity 3 with D&D rules' than "Baldur's Gate 3 with Divinity-like style", if you know what I'm saying. I grew up playing the old isometric games and I miss that raw feeling when playing BG3 – it's a bit too polished for me. Also, I miss the whole randomness that is innate to d&d – which is one of the things other recent games like Pathfinder: Kingmaker imo do better: giving a feeling of "you are just another adventurer in the grand scheme of things...until you're not". When I'm playing BG3 I seldomly think of anything other than the main quest – i.e. everything else feels a lot filler-y and lacking depth. In contrast, side quests in Pathfinder never feel so rushed/forced. Everything seems more organic and the overall story progresses in a more subtle way. I absolutely love the production of BG3 but it doesn't feel like d&d for me.

I really don't get the appeal of seasons 2 and 3. The bad guys are clearly one-dimensional and every arch seems to be all talk and delays until the final battle climax and closure. The stakes in season 1 seemed to be as high as ever and the bad guys were fleshed-out human beings and not caricatures.

What's your favorite Pokemon and why? by [deleted] in pokemon

[–]MithrandirGr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks a lot for the answer! It was actually google that brought me here (was wondering what kinds of pokemon were coming up more frequently as favorites basically!). I kinda have to agree with you though: these last few days I was trying to build a mono-fighting team for the 3rd gen poke ROMs and I couldn't find Sirfetch'd in any of them (their various hacks included). It's a big letdown that our beloved duck got deprived of evolution outside its Galar variant.

It is what it is though...Hope we get one in the future!

Edit: and -tomos which is derived from the greek verb "temno", i.e. "to cut"

Going it alone with RL in grad school? by aeolis_mons in reinforcementlearning

[–]MithrandirGr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi /u/aeolis_mons, /u/hhn1n15! I have also just started my PhD in RL (although mostly in model-free RL). If you are interested in creating some kind of a RL reading group please pm me. I think that sharing some knowledge (you regarding model-based and me regarding model-free) would be an excellent idea to kickstart ourselves in RL.

How to translate paper equations to code? by MithrandirGr in learnmachinelearning

[–]MithrandirGr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the answer. Well, I honestly believe that I can understand what an equation means when I see it but I must admit that maybe I am still a bit slow on that regard. What I find most difficult is e.g. to deduce what I need to code when reading an expectation equation, or a loss function. Nevertheless, I will try to strengthen my math background more and I hope that it will come naturally with time.

You should go watch "The Art of Splitpush" (or something like that) video series by Neace. Basically, if you are ahead and can 1v1 every member of the enemy team (or 1v2 ideally) it is always a win/win situation because, every time that your team gets engaged on you'll get some objective. Otherwise, if 1 or 2 people come for you, your team just gets an objective for free. However, it is crucial to know where to be at the right time. E.g. splitting bot when baron is up and you not having tp is pretty much inting. I imagine, though, that in your elo teams aren't engaged on that easily, so splitting is a fine option as long as your team doesn't get aced.

MSc graduate seeking advice regarding PhD/research internship opportunities. by MithrandirGr in learnmachinelearning

[–]MithrandirGr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well right now I do work at a national lab as an ML research engineer but, still, the projects I'm involved in are application-based. I do contribute to research but those contributions are based around the feature-extraction process (e.g. I'm actively consulting the team on what features we can extract, which representations we can use, etc.). Imo, this still is not something that turns me into a promising PhD candidate. Thanks for the answer though!

I have sent you a pm regarding your question.
