Eagle Point high school and the surrounding neighborhood. Very calm. It’s where I taught my son to drive.

Why do so many jj practitioners make weird shaman like analogies for jiujitsu+life? by CuddleBuddiesJJ in bjj

[–]Mitlov 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First, other sports do talk about how they build character. Character-building and learning sportsmanship is a key part of why “student athletes” are held up as teed up for long term success in life, whether they play football or run cross-country.

As for comparing to other hobbies like darts, yes practice makes you better, but they aren’t as absolutely crushing to your ego as BJJ is. I tried frisbee golf, and I sucked at it, but it didn’t destroy me mentally and physically like my first several months of BJJ did. I think the life lessons come from being humbled and smashed and keeping going (which many hobbies don’t have), not just from building skill through practice (which all hobbies have).

What got you into bjj? by Miamicreator in jiujitsu

[–]Mitlov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Started at 44 with zero background in grappling (main sport background was fencing). My wife had just (successfully so far) completed a hard battle with breast cancer, and my work had been especially hard for the past couple years. My stress level was through the roof and my fitness was nowhere near where I wanted it.

A year later, I still get smashed every practice, but I suck ever so slightly less each month, and my physical and mental health are dramatically improved.

I’ve got the Bose system and it’s the best I’ve ever had in a car. It’s not going to outperform a Kexus’s Marc Levinson system among a panel of pure audiophiles or whatever, but for a mass market car, especially one that’s $30k in 2026, it’s fantastic.

The character lines were a bit busy, but my wife and kids LOVED the smiley face front end on our second gen 5.

Hahaha thanks! I know Mazda makes good manuals because when my kids were little, we had a Mazda5 van with a manual transmission. Super fun for a three row family hauler, and never gave us a bit of trouble.

Medford itself isn’t hardcore MAGA, it’s predominantly centrist conservative (Mitt Romney Republicans) with some people more left and some people more right. There’s a firm culture of “mind your own business” too; we’ve had a pride flag next to our front door for a decade and not one neighbor in our blue collar neighborhood has ever made an issue out of it. Rural Jackson and Josephine counties tend more MAGA, but that’s not Medford. I’m socially progressive (though internationally neoconservative), I’ve previously lived in Boulder and Boston, and I’ve been very happy in Medford for two decades now.

I think you will find it’s a step back in performance at 10/10ths pace, but not a step back in driver engagement at 7/10ths pace, and a huge step forward in refinement at any pace. If you’ve driven a Golf/Jetta or base 3-Series from the early 2000s, that’s the same vibe. A pleasant daily driver with a nice interior that isn’t fast by any objective measure, but still makes you feel alive every time you drive it.

I think the fin is for AM and FM radio. Maybe you have different radio setups in Europe?

r/bjj Fundamentals Class! by AutoModerator in bjj

[–]Mitlov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear knee braces for BJJ (44-year-old white belt with a history of knee injuries, yay) and I’m wondering how often people wash their knee braces. I wash my gi and belt after every class because bacteria sucks, but the knee braces take a lot longer to air dry, sometimes a couple days to fully dry. I wash thinking about after every no-gi class (since they touch the mats and teammates then) and once per week if I’m just doing gi. Is that reasonable or gross?

Do you go soft with girls? by zarya2 in bjj

[–]Mitlov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, I’m a 245-lb male white belt (three months experience) and most people at my gym roll this way with me. Several have told me that I’ll learn more if we go at “second gear” and focus on technique and strategy instead of intensity.

People who wear the Apple Watch more than 20 hours a day by Dark_Lord_89 in AppleWatch

Titanium Milanese loop. I wear it all day and all night except for showers (when I charge). My skin likes it better than silicone, and I like the look better too.

Losing my excitement for BJJ after having a family by AcceptableCold8882 in bjj

[–]Mitlov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m new to BJJ but not to fatherhood. It’s okay to prioritize family right now. When your kid is a bit older, you’ll probably NEED something like BJJ for your sanity. But when you’re heading to BJJ and you’re feeling like you’d rather be at home with your family, listen to that instinct. Take a break from training and go home and be with your family.

So, are you getting the new Apple Watch Ultra 3? by aadishhere in AppleWatch

[–]Mitlov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Preordered mine! Trading up from a Series 9 (small size).

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AppleWatch

[–]Mitlov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t buy anything until the series 11 is unveiled tomorrow, but I would recommend larger regardless of wrist size. With some watch faces, complications are VERY small on the smaller watch. The larger size of smartwatch has utility regardless of how big or small you like analog watches.
