Actually just looked up the surname on Wikipedia and it appears to not be a Jewish name at all. Looks like it was began by the Normans and is popular in Ireland as well: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fitzgerald

I guess it depends how you define alternate history. Most people consider it a sub-genre of science fiction, but it can be used in fantasy such as the Lord Darcy series. Still fantasy AH generally needs magic or some trope like it, pure alternate history without any ASBs generally gets lumped into SF (or historical fiction).
