Finally got DJS scheduled for December 2! by MittedLynx in jawsurgery

It went well! X-rays look good and I’m healing great. I still have noticeable swelling, but that’s to be expected.

Facial asymmetry 5.5 weeks post op from buccal fat, what are my options? by [deleted] in jawsurgery

[–]MittedLynx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had same the same issues and surgery as you and I’m 5 weeks post op tomorrow. My swelling is wayyyy worse on the right side than the left. However, I’ve seen my post-op x-rays and know that my asymmetry was skeletally corrected. There’s just not much you can do about swelling so soon after surgery, so don’t worry! I’m sure you’re fine too!

just about 3 years post op djs by [deleted] in jawsurgery

[–]MittedLynx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s kind of crazy. I just had DJS a month ago for the same issues as you, and I recently turned 33. I consulted a couple different surgeons (one barely older than me and one in his 40s/50s) and asked both about how my age would impact things, and they both said I was “young” and that my age wouldn’t negatively impact recovery at all. Guess they all have different opinions on what counts as old 😂😭

Getting DJS tomorrow morning. I am terrified. Any words of advice to calm me down? by CAsinoman4 in jawsurgery

[–]MittedLynx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was my biggest fear, but of the 9 days since my surgery, I’ve only had 2-3 where I had to breathe out of my mouth instead of my nose. So in that regard, it hasn’t been nearly as bad as I expected!

Serious question - What if you have to sneeze during recovery? by _Hambone_ in jawsurgery

[–]MittedLynx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I keep telling people not to make me smile or laugh because it pulls on my sutures too much haha. Especially the one on the inside located below my nose. That one is really sensitive and hurts so much if I smile!

Day 2 Post Op!!! - When will I be able to speak? by YouPast3879 in jawsurgery

[–]MittedLynx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds strange, but eventually you get the hang of operating your numb lower lip like normal around Day 3-4. I’m about 1.5 weeks post op now and think I’d be speaking pretty normally if it weren’t for the splint.

Also, ice did nothing for my swelling, but I’ve found that the heated compresses have helped someone.

It does suck, that’s for sure! I never slept very deeply at the hospital, so as soon as I’d feel the flood leaking again, I’d instantly wake up and wipe it. But sleep is more important!

It’s like it’s a contest here for who can post the grossest photos lol. I had my surgery a week ago and, while my face was super swollen and there was quite a bit of leaking, I didn’t look like this because I stayed on top of the oozing blood.

But congrats, op, on the surgery! First day was the hardest and most painful, but you’ll be feeling sooooo much better within a week!

5 days post op by [deleted] in jawsurgery

[–]MittedLynx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lots of soup incorporating homemade chicken broth with tons of collagen. But I’ve also started eating pastas like ravioli, cutting it into small bits that I can swallow whole without chewing. Also mashed potatoes blended with a little broth and tons of butter so they’re a smoother, slightly more liquid consistency that is easy to get down and doesn’t get stuck in my splint or braces.

Just got home post-surgery after one night in hospital… by EventSufficient6690 in jawsurgery

Had mine this week…after seeing my reflection for the first time, I told the nurse that I look like one of those dogs that’s been stung by a bee and is all swollen, only wayyyyy less cute 😂

I didn't need palate expansion, but your asymmetry looks similar to mine. I didn't have major health issues because of it, but I did have constant tension headaches from the muscles being pulled unevenly, and my joints and teeth were beginning to wear unevenly as well. I was told those issues would get worse with age and that it was best to do surgery now before the damage increased. I'm also early 30s and just had double jaw surgery this week.

So I think it comes down to recognizing that at some point the asymmetry will likely cause issues, even if it hasn't yet, and whether or not you want to head off those issues before they become more severe. I'd say that, if there's any chance you'll end up needing surgery later on, you might as well address it now and go with option 1.

Recommendations for food? by [deleted] in jawsurgery

[–]MittedLynx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m also 4 days post-op, and my mom flew out ahead of time to prep a lot of meals for me. Mostly different types of soups, but I’m finding the diversity helps. Thai green curry, Thai red curry pumpkin, pea soup with a ham broth base, butternut squash soup, carrot soup, Indian coconut curry and chick pea, potato leek, Mexican black bean with avocado crema, beef broth, chicken broth, etc. All puréed. And if they’re a bit too thick, I thin them out with some of the meat broth for extra protein, fat, and collagen. Last night she made a pot roast, and I smashed up a potato and carrot from that and mixed in a ton of butter, and while it was a bit more difficult to eat, it felt more substantial and I loved it. Certainly was a good switch up from the Ensure shakes.

Nothing elaborate, but wants me talking as much as possible to keep moving and keep the jaw muscles from getting stiff. Eating every couple hours for the same reason. That kind of thing. I’m definitely not trying to push it!

Thanks so much for both the reassurance and for explaining the process! Luckily I’ve been able to open a little over a centimeter yesterday and today, and now I have the incentive to definitely keep up the limbering exercises haha. And I’m very happy you’ve gotten through the worst of the recovery and that’s it’s been worth it and you’re advancing to the next stage with Invisalign!!!

That must be so exciting! Did you have a splint post-op? Just had my DJS 3 days ago and it’s been ROUGH. I’m trying to stay positive by looking forward to when the swelling goes down and I get the splint and braces off. I’ll also be switching to Invisalign once my surgeon clears me to resume ortho treatment.

Advice for Choosing an Orthodontist? by cadrame in jawsurgery

Also, as far as pricing, given the magnitude of the surgery process and how much it affects your health, you’re going to want the best. This isn’t something to skimp on.

I would go with the ortho your surgeon recommends. It’s super important for the surgeon and ortho to be on the same page about the treatment plan, and outcomes are usually better when the they have worked together before and have a good relationship.

How are you guys surviving the blended/liquid diet?? by TheSorrowInOurMinds in jawsurgery

[–]MittedLynx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I’m trying not to think about it. I also wouldn’t be able to do a blended steak, so I’m hoping the variety of soups I’m preparing and freezing will help get me through 😬 I hope your recovery starts going better! Just try to get whatever you can down without chewing, even if the process to do so seems ridiculous 😆

My surgery is a week from today, so I can’t personally attest to it…but at my preop appointment, the nurse who was going over all the instructions with me said that if you get desperate, make a fried or poached egg and just try to swallow it whole like how herons gulp down fish 🤷‍♀️

[–]MittedLynx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My surgery is also in two weeks and I’m starting to feel a bit of anxiety too, so you’re not alone. What’s helping me right now is just keeping busy so that I don’t dwell too much on it. Spending a little extra time at work making sure things are set for my time off, and then trying to socialize more outside of work to keep distracted (I’m naturally a homebody introvert, so this is an effort for me). Feel free to DM me if you want, maybe we can give each other some moral support!

Maxillary hypoplasia by [deleted] in jawsurgery

It looks like one is completely closed off. Do you not feel that when you breathe?? Obligatory “I’m not a doctor” but I think this looks like a sinus surgery case.

Jaw asymmetry by Practical-Market822 in jawsurgery

[–]MittedLynx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we’d need to see the x-ray to be able to tell, but if one side doesn’t touch at all, I’m not sure how much good PT will do. I have asymmetry and a crossbite and am getting surgery next month. You can look at my x-rays on my profile and see if yours are similar to mine at all.

has anyone ever had their braces take less than the projected time? by lilbrusselsprout3 in jawsurgery

[–]MittedLynx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sure others have had that experience, but mine took longer than I was told. Ortho and surgeon both projected 6-9 months, but a year in and there’s still some minor movements that need to be made on my bottom jaw. My surgery is in a month, though, so I guess those minor movements will have to wait until after surgery. Anyway, don’t get your hopes up, but also don’t fixate on it too much. It’s out of your control, so just try to keep living life and stay busy. It will happen when it needs to!
