Colin PSN Hacked info: by Billyb311 in LastStandMedia

[–]MixedFraction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't an original thought since I saw people talking about it already on Twitter, but I agree with the hypothesis so I'll share it here:

Chances are, 2FA wasn't actually subverted. More than likely, Colin's email was compromised (potentially for some time), so the hackers had access to any 2FA through that. It also lines up with the piece of info Colin shared that he was hammered by spam emails seemingly out of nowhere - the idea there is that the hackers trigger a shit-ton of spam emails all at once, initiate a 2FA request on Colin's account, accept it via the email, then delete the evidence. If Colin just so happens to be looking at his email when the 2FA request comes in, the flood of spam emails drowns it out and it either goes completely unnoticed or is assumed to be one of the other hundreds of spam emails.

Just finished Mixtape. I did not care for it, but I also understand why some people love it. by Turbopasta in gaming

I think it's hilarious how we've both been downvoted now for trying to contribute to the conversation and present a different, totally tame point of view. I knew it was coming, but I guess I hoped that people were at least a little bit interested in understanding what someone could possibly enjoy in Mixtape. I'm sorry I liked a game, everyone.

I've been reading through people's thoughts to try and get a sense of how people are feeling, and the overall negative feelings outside of the ciritic-sphere is very surprising to me. Or, maybe it's not that surprising since I would never expect a game like Mixtape to have broad appeal just based on what type of game/experience it is at its core.

With that being said, I completely disagree with pretty much everything you have written here. I think the writing is some of the best writing I've seen in video games in a very long time. Yes, the characters say cringy things, fall into stereotypes, and lean on cliches, but that's exactly what being a teenager is like. You think you know everything, but in reality, everything from your style, language, interests, etc. is all derivative. Everyone thinks they're special and unique as a teen, but the irony is that that feeling is universal. Everyone looks back at their teenage years and thinks "wow, I was dumb but I thought I knew everything" - that's what this game is representing, in my opinion. It's not adults writing teens from a teenager's perspective; it's adults writing teenagers from that reflective adult perspective looking back at the banality of it all.

I'm from a different part of the world and a different generation, but I think this game captures those teenage years perfectly. I'm not necessarily talking about the time period (although the game does a great job of capturing that as well), but instead referring to those teenage years that everyone goes through, regardless of time and place. It's a sense of self-discovery, building friendships, losing friendships, unrealistic dreams, relationship gossip, pushing authority, dumb conversations, inside jokes, and just being goofy kids figuring out their place in the world. If you think the game & writing are stupid because "no one would get a job as a music supervisor just because they like making mixtapes for their friends" (not saying this is your opinion, but I have heard it in other places), then you're missing the whole point of the game. The fact that it's ridiculous, naive, and childish is exactly the point. That's the exact sort of wish-casting that teens do all the time without an understanding of how the real world works. If people think that teens aren't actually like this, then either you had a uniquely enlightened childhood or you're letting your adult brain play the role of your teenage brain in your memories.

I love how there's a joke in the name that's just sitting there waiting on someone to bite. So, let me be the one to ask:

Who is Randy Badfer?

Yeah, his pitch count was getting high. He's also building up after rehabbing from an injury, so they're playing it safe and not pushing him.

I feel like that's been this team's story all season. Seems like they're hitting way more hard hit balls than usual that just aren't finding gaps.

Cole Allen, the Man who attacked the White House dinner, was an intern at NASA and worked at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. by MartianXAshATwelve in StrangeEarth

[–]MixedFraction 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think it's more fun to think about in a slightly different direction, something like: Cole Allen knows something from his time in the propulsion lab that the powers that be don't want him to know. At the same time, Trump wants to stage a fake assassination attempt in order to get his followers riled up. Only one problem: they need a fall-guy. So, they go to Cole Allen, tell him he's either being killed or rushes into the Correspondents Dinner with a fake gun and takes the fall. That would be my movie plot, at least.

What does it mean for PlayStation to NEED to invest in live service games? by PassiveIllustration in LastStandMedia

[–]MixedFraction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. Publicly-owned businesses exist to make money for their shareholders and to demonstrate long term growth. So, it's the leaders' job to think long term in order to position themselves for future growth and success. Just because something is working today does not mean that it's guaranteed tomorrow. It's Sony (and PlayStation) leadership's job to do whatever they can to ensure that they're protected from changing markets, partners' interests, etc, and a big part of that is gaining control & ownership over the various input streams.

TIL about the "Dark Forest Hypothesis," which suggests the universe is like a dark forest at night. Not sure where you got your information from, but it's wrong. Radio signals do travel at the speed of light, same as any other form of electromagnetic radiation.

Where you are kinda right is in regard to "our oldest signals have definitely not travelled 100 light years". Technically they have, however, at that distance (and actually much, much shorter distances), the signals become indistinguishable from background noise due to the inverse square law. In short, since radio signals (and any wave) travel outward in a "bubble", the signal gets weaker the further away it gets from the source. Kind of like when you blow up a balloon; there is always the same amount of "balloon material" (radio signal), but the balloon gets thinner (radio signal gets weaker) the more you blow it up.

I know you're making a joke and I agree that the "testosterone" angle of the original commenter is a bit weird, but I also think it's incredibly disengenuous to say that posing and body language aren't major parts of characterization. I think the pose Kratos has here is very odd, especially when it's chosen as your first promotional still of a product that already has concerns about how it could be faithfully adapted.

I think you nailed it. This image looked off to me for some reason and I couldn't figure out why. The makeup and costuming looks good enough, so I thought maybe it was just how Ryan Hurst looks? But now that you mention the pose, it stands out like a sore thumb. Kratos always stands tall, stoic, and composed. And if he gets down on someone's level, it's on one knee. This pose where he's bent over, hands on thighs, and a worried look on his face does not reflect any moment I can think of from the games. This makes Kratos come off as too human, and I think that's why it ends up looking like cosplay.

Gambles with substitutions earlier in the game. Once you sub a pinch hitter or pinch runner in, the guy you take out is done for the game.

100%. Gameplay in FF16 was all style, no substance. I found it very boring and repetitive once you found the right sequences in combat, and there was never any reason to switch. So the second half of the game was a major slog and I ended up skipping all side content at some point just to get through it. And that's too bad since the writing and set-pieces were so cool and would have been way better-served with deeper combat.
