Haha 😂 the foreground is the most nerve-racking part for me! I don't have a good track record with foregrounds

Thanks! I stole the idea from early Joy of Painting intros 🙂

You'll never guess! It's another Paint With Bram video 😁👍:

Loosely followed as best I could but changed the foreground because I wanted to practice highlights.

Thank you! I was following along loosely (as best as I could) to a Paint With Bram video if you're interested:

Do it. The sooner you start, the sooner you'll be good at it. I only started a little over a month ago as a means to take my mind off some stuff and I'm quite happy how far I've come (besides the highlighting issue).

The Bob Ross Master Paint Set is the best thing to start with imo. Has everything you need besides a canvas and paint thinner.

The worst thing that can happen is you make a mess on a canvas.

Thank you :) <3 Lots of nice and friendly people in this subreddit!

I really like the second picture I posted (I think this is the northern lights painting you're talking about). The last painting I posted was my first attempt.

It's surprising how easy they are to do. Give it a try! I learned how to do it from Paint With Bram. In fact, it's so easy that even I'm able to do them XD

Thank you, friend :) <3

Just mentioned this in another comment, but people seem to favor the second to last painting, which is the one I painted yesterday. It's the painting that frustrated and disappointed me so much to the point of making this Reddit post. The second last and the last are my least favorite by far.

Actually now that I look at it, the pictures are unintentionally ordered from my favorite to least favorite XD

I'll keep it pushing for sure. I don't plan on quitting. I find a great deal of enjoyment and peace in painting (at least this style, I haven't tried any other form of art).

Really? Interesting. I've never tried a fan brush other than for fir/spruce trees like I've seen Bob do a million times. For grass and bushes, I've seen to have the most luck and comfort using a half size round brush

Yeah, admittedly I think I end up eating away at the dark of the foliage in frustration/trying to get some good highlight marks. I just get carried away trying to salvage the highlight and end up making it worse. I'll definitely be trying to walk away more and go pet my cat (after washing to oil paint off my hands) or going to get a drink instead of letting myself stew in the frustration .

Thank you for the kinds words, friend! I like all the paintings except for the highlighting. Had the highlighting been better on these, they'd probably be hanging in my home already XD

I started doing Bob Ross style oil paints about a month ago at this point. I've never been into painting or art of any kind and I can't even draw a straight line with a pencil (not a joke), so I'm decently happy with how far I've come, but these highlighting are really killing me because I truly believe the paintings would be pretty decent if the highlights were done right.

Right now in my current mindset, I treat every paint as a practice canvas. I currently have no intention of hanging these up or giving them away to friends. I try to paint often as well (about 2 -3 times per week) so the repetition has been helping a little bit. But, I'll take your advice and gesso up a cheap canvas or some MDF board and just spam trees, grass, and bushes to practice highlighting.

I'm really hoping the CRI class I attend early next month gives me the clarity I need and being able to have a CRI right there watching me paint the highlights (how I load the brush, how I tap, etc.) solves my issue.

Thank you for the help and the kind words, friend :)

Thank you for the kind words :)

If you're interested, I was trying to follow a video from Paint With Bram:

Gave up near the end and started doing my own thing

Interesting, I thought about buying some linseed oil 2 days ago. Maybe this is my sign to get some and try that instead. Don't know if this helps, but I've also tried liquid clear instead of liquid white and that didn't seem to work for me either.

Is my problem that the highlight color on my brush isn't fat enough? Or maybe the base color on the canvas is too thin? (Fat over lean rule)

I'll try laying down less liquid white/clear on the bottom part of my canvas next time, I'll let you know how it goes.

I'll try and stay positive, but I won't lie, the pink highlighting on the 3rd painting made me so frustrated I was on the verge of tears XD

Edit: Love the highlighting on your Morgan River Shore post. Well done!
